Afternoon all.

My A4 1.9TDi Sport is in need of an AVS2 service and as it's done 110K, thought best to get the cambelt done at the same time, reqd at 115k.

So, look in this forum, ring around the usuals and for the sheer hell of it, ring my local stealers (Stansted Audi). Prices vary dramatically, as expected.

I have always taken my Audis to Fontains in Iver. Very reputable and have trusted them with my motors. I expected the cambelt to be expensive. And the AVS2 to be a couple of hundred quid.

Fontains... £459 for the cambelt, £317 for the AVS2 and about £40 for the water pump. (Total £816)

At this point, I was surprised. If not slightly disappointed.

Stansted Audi... £390 for the cambelt, £249 for the AVS2 and about the same for the water pump. (Total £679)

At this point, even more surprised that the stealers were quite a bit less.

Rang around and a bit of searching on the internet. Came across "Volkswagen Techniker" near Chelmsford, about 4 miles from my house. Gave em a ring and they came back with...

£260 for cambelt
£220 for AVS2
£35 for the water pump
[also £37 for a brake fluid replacement]

Total when comparing (£515)...

So... a £300 saving. I am happy with paying £500 as I know this will now last me another 20k.

I rang Fontains and told them that even a DEALER was cheaper than them, they said in a round about way, "Oh that's because it's in Essex, not round here. But if you get it written down, we'll try and price match it"... in my eyes, I think most people would choose to go with a dealer, get a dealer's stamp and receipt than an independant... [** expecting a barrage of comments about that last statement! **]

All in all happy that I got a reasonable price for a fair bit of work, disappointed that my usual trusty independant may have been taking the p!ss out of me for the last few years.

Motor booked in for next monday. Will let you know if the service at Volkswagen Techniker is any good.

Mmmm, I've noticed that independents hourly rates have increased significantly recently. I guess it's down to the fact that dealership prices have soared, so the indies pump theirs up because they can, but sometimes they reach the point where it's a toss up between a few quid saving and a dealer stamp. My local indie is still about 30% cheaper per hour than a dealer tho.

I am glad someone else has noticed that too. I am sure Fontains weren't that expensive before, but as you say, they are probably chancing their arm as most people wouldn't go to a dealer for this type of work due to the price. I just hope that they are not playing on their name.

Mind you, I didn't get quotes from AmD or MRC ... would be interesting to see how they faired.

Brixo, well as an Audi dealer isn't going to put your car back up on their forecourt if you ever sell it to them, then whats the real worry with not having a dealer stamp ???

If I was a prospective buyer of your car then as long as you had receipts to prove it had been serviced then whats the problem ?!

Thats why I've just spent £800 with the guy that looks after my cars.
Just had him do full cambelt, pulleys, waterpump, full 70k service, brake fluid, genuine pads and discs allround plus some 'other' bits done.

I used to do a lot of work for the local Porsche dealer in Essex, and if they used to see a stamp from a very well respected Porsche independant service agent, they would accept it as just as good as their own 'stamp' !!

You also say that VW place is 4 miles from your house ? I'm also based in Chelmsford

Regards,

Andy

If I were to buy a second hand car, I agree, I would be ok with specialists doing the work, especially a well respected one. I have just had people say "oh it's not full Audi main dealer history" when selling my other Audis. If the price is the same from a dealer as an independant, I would prefer the Audi dealer - although it pains me to say it - hate paying money to them.

The guy that I am going to is in Margaret Roding, between Hatfield Heath and Chelmsford. VW Techniker - http://www.vwtec.co.uk/

Goes in Monday... will see how the service is...
