I had Audi service my car (engine oil and haldex) on Monday. I need the history stamp and they actually worked out cheaper than the local specialists as they offer a reduced labor rate for ‘mature’ vehicles.

Before they’d finished the service I got a phone call detailing some problems that they’d spotted on the car.

Clutch – apparently this is faulty. It needs investigation but is likely to need replacing.
Front brakes and pads – fair enough, I knew about this and was planning to change myself soon.
Front ARB – needs replacing
Rear ARB – needs replacing
Rear shocks – they are leaking and need replacing.

At the moment I think the car is running really well; they clutch is nice to use and there are no suspension knocks, creaks etc, and therefore I’m a bit suspicious about all this work but I've allowed them to quote me anyway.

The quote for all the work is £2600!!! This is for the individual jobs, and I’ll get a discount if I get all the work done at the same time. Obviously I’m not going to be paying £2600 (don’t have £2600 for starters!), and I do as much work on my cars myself as I’m able to.

So I thought it best to investigate these issues myself. I took the car to my local Mr Clutch today. They said ‘She pulls like a **@!, that clutch is @*!*@@!* perfect, who told you there was something wrong with that!’ – which is what I thought, but without all the swearing.
The biting point is really low, and there is a tiny bit of play in the first downward part of the travel of the clutch pedal, but I really like the low biting point, far better than it being in the middle of the clutch pedal travel. The clutch is progressive, no judder and no slip, and it hasn’t changed in the way it feels since I brought it 7k miles ago.

Next I went to my mates garage. They make cars rather than fix them, but they know what they are doing, having ex F1 backgrounds etc. I jacked up the rear, and there is no sign of the shocks leaking at all!!!
The rear ARB does have rust where it meets the bushes, so I accept this will need replacing soon.

Then I jacked up the front, and the front ARB is similar to the rear, so it too will need replacing at some point.

It seems a bit suspicious to me that both ARBs need changing, but Audi are also saying that rear shocks and clutch also need doing:
-Front ARB requires sub frame to be dropped, as does clutch change (I think).
-Rear ARB needs unbolting from the shocks (well, drop link to be exact).
It seems the offer of reduced labor can be achieved because the ‘fake’ faults my car has are jobs that relate to the work required to replace the ARBs?

Anyways, I’m just venting my frustration with all this. I know no one here will be surprised to hear this story about a main dealer, that’s why people call them stealers, but it amazes me that any customer would be so stupid to simply say “Well the car seems fine to me, but if you say so, £2600, yeah ok”.

I’ve got some standard front discs and I’m watching the current Brake Pads thread. For the ARBs I think I’ll get some R32 ones, do the work myself and save about £2300.

They should have least justified why they thought various peices needed replacing.

If the clutch works and you are okay with the low bite point, then leave it as it is. Mine is low and I don't mind (a3 so slightly different setup). Most cars will have a little play in the pedal.

As for the arbs, they aren't going to fail for a little rust. I would consider pulling them of and painting them or having them powder coated. IMO you don't need new ones. Your choice at the end of the day.

Dealers see a problem and just replace. It's not cost effective for them to do anything else.

Good luck with it all anyway.

thats out of order, dont trading standards visit these people?
i feel for people who arnt as wise and shell out this kind of money out of fear the car being unsafe etc
even if the work did need doing how can they justify charging £2600 !!!!!!

Par for the course, they obviously discount the labour to get you through the door knowing they'll be able to fleece some poor soul for additional work that really does not need to be done, but £2600????? That's more than my B5 is worth. Unbelievable, but sadly believable (if you know what I mean).

The SAD thing is Andy, that someone out there would have actually paid the sum of £2600 to get the work done, simple bacuase they don't know any better...

True to what Jo says, some people know any better and would have gladly paid that on the fact that they are "qualified audi technicians"

What a horrible world we live in!!!

There really should be something done about this, as its just scandalous!!!

Yep, that's why they do it I guess. They only need 1 naive customer out of every 10 to make it worthwhile. They should do some reality TV shows like Rogue Traders about the scams that go on in garages, now that would be interesting.....

Cheers guys. I haven't phoned the dealership back and told them they are talking rubbish. I won't get anything out of it and its not going to change their work ethics unfortunately.

HTC, I know what you mean about refurbishing the bars, but I'm undecided as I also feel that new ones arn't too expensive.

cal1470, do you work at a audi dealer then? It may even be the same dealership seeing as you're in kettering?

****** dealers !!! :whistle2:

Huh hurrmmm you mean STEALERS :moa: but the ****** part was right, they are real shites for this, as HTC says the ARB's will be fine, its normal to get some rust around the bushes, mine had it & 7-8 years on no problems from what I know after I sold after my 7 years, drop the ARB's down & just clean them up, change the bushes & paint the arb's & jobs a gooden fella & as for shocks I personally in 7 years never once had any issues with that area

Yeah as JoJo & Mac said its sad someone will actually listen to them & do this, but its not limited to the stealers, tuners also do this, I had one particular experience with QST which was similar, hence never returned but wasnt anywhere near 2600 though, but was a joke to say the least, will never go back there, I only use one tuner & he's never let me down & always done a great job, completely honest & if I have a question he helps without question, but I seriously havnt had a single problem & he's done 3 cars of mine, Simon@amd cant fault him & I know someone from years back that does any major mechanics to my car, I use audi only at the last resort

I do work at a dealer....and it is localish to Kettering....but luckily i don't work in the service dept or workshop! Phew!:notme:

Its not just Audi, i had a similar thing with Honda a few years ago regarding my 70 year old father in law sending his civic to Crewe for a routine service without my knowledge. They phoned him to say (brake problem sir) to which he agreed unfortunately, they replaced both front disks and pads on a 3 year old civic with 18,000 mile on the clock.

So as not to bore you with too much detail I will cut it short.

My father in law was very annoyed when faced with a £700 bill and they even made him put fuel in the courtesy car to travel 12 miles home and back.

When i found out i hit the roof and made phone calls and visits and demanded to see the failed disks and pads (which had mysteriously disappeared) After letters to head office and visits to the stealers nothing was forthcoming from Honda.

But it gave me a great deal of satisfaction to tell that dead head service manager just what i thought of him in front of customers who's own cars were in his workshop. Boy did he squirm.

Yeah I guess any dealer, or any company, will try their luck when they can.

Shame they don't realise the benefits of providing a good honest service that is appreciated by people who then tell others. I wouldn't really think twice about using amd after NHN's comments above. And equally I can recommend not using the Audi dealership that is 'localish to kettering'.

cal1470 - I guess you're off the hook then!

Seeing as my ARBs don't creak or knock I think I'll worry a little less about them and just keep an eye on them.

So, out of all of the faults identified on my car, the only one thats actually genuine and worth worrying about is the front discs and pads! Which I obviously knew about anyway!
