Not only they're trying rip you off but it sounded like they're also trying to manipulate her by claiming that the failed MOT would unvalidate her insurance.
But glad to hear you got it fixed in the end.
It looks like buying a car has just got even harder, even though they pass all conventional checks. We have to be on the look out for scams involving the lost of thousands of DVLA log books:

The only place I would never buy flash memory from is ebay. There are people who are still allowed to sell fake SD/SDHC cards, USB flash drives etc despite complaints and growing awareness. The fakes are not as advertised and they will corrupt data.
Mymemory.co.uk do Kingston 2GB SD cards for £6.99 inc. delivery. The cheapest on there is £4.99 inc. delivery.

They also sell 4GB SD cards (not SDHC) for £8.99 inc delivery.

The video won't play on my browser but I think I know which video is being shown since it was recently posted on the other forums. Apparently the woman got caught in the end: http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/national/woman-charged-after-parking-escapade-becomes-viral-sensation/article1343670/
There's a thread on here about people's views and experience:

My cruise control was retrofitted by Fontain but it wasn't fully connected since they didn't have the necessary wiring diagrams. I tried chasing them about those wiring diagrams...
This is the update logo that could be the final design with the added line: "Vorsprung durch Technik".

All that dribble reminds me of those scam sites that tries to convince people they can turn you into millionaires overnight. "Earn lots of money in less than a day!!"! :)
