Hi everyone I currently have an old petrol R reg BMW and I am looking to buy my first audi and my first diesel, I been looking at the Audi s lines 170 and 140, I have a budget of about 11k I don't know much at all about them. I know asking a tall order but I what as new as I can get and as low mileage as I can get. I've never spent more than 3k on a car so this is very doubting for me.

i have been told to steer clear of engines before 08 as they had many probs is this true ?

I have seen an A3 2008 5 door sport back 2.0 tdi CR DPF 140 s line it's a late 58 reg is this the 138 or 143 ? The mileage is 56.000 with full audi histroy it's on the forecourt for £12,488 but have knocked him down to 11.800. What is the engine like ? Are they quick and reliveable and should I be worried about this DPF thing. Are they quick and easy to chip should I want to later on? It's a lot of money I want something to last me a while there is no big extras really. Here a pic of it Used Cars - 2008 Audi A3 2.0 TDi S line 5dr - HALF LEATHER - 18 INCH ALLOYS Black any advice tips ect needed also is there anything I need to look for before committing to buy ? Many thanks in advance

Hay I'm from the portsmouth area do u know much about the above.? Really stuck here lol

Have you test driven a diesel A3 yet?

Your in for a bit of shock if you haven't as the A3 is a bit dull handling wise compared to even a knackered 3 series.
Likewise although i'm a fan of diesels and VAG make some crackers, but personally i don't think they're a patch on the later BMW diesels.

I'd also advise against being blinkered as far as mileage goes.
Personally i wouldn't touch low mileage cars with a barge pole, i'd much sooner have a higher mileage version that's been well looked after and serviced regularly.

id stick to buying cars that are under 3k tbh. some really nice cars out there for that price that are far more reliable that these a3s and best of all you'll never have to visit an audi dealer!

you say you like bms?
BMW 330D SE SILVER - 02 REG - 129K MILES - ****** PRICE NOW REDUCED ****** | eBay

"I have my eye on a £12k Audi."

"Maybe this 130k mile, 3k BM would do instead?"

- Did you get stung by the stealers, or just generally being anti-Audi and rather unhelpful?

I wouldn't worry about the DPF providing you are doing long enough journeys to let it regenerate. You can always get it deleted and remapped, but this costs. You can buy some models that don't have a DPF, but they tend to be the 140s.

Sline trim is what really pushes budgets, I couldnt bring myself to spend the extra so settled for the bog standard SE.

I agree that BMWs diesels are better, but the audis are styled nicer, so swings and roundabouts. Also agree with not being put off by higher mileage, a lot of these cars are lease cars with superb service history, mostly just driven up and down motorways.

no, im pretty anti-audi because i work on these cars everyday as im a tester and tech.

do insted? no, as those bmws are a far better car all round. and you could buy 4 of them with 12k! makes you think doesnt it!

shoot me down if you like, but i dont believe in buying a car thats still depreciating rapidly. theres alot to be said about maintaining an older car vs loosing money on a newer one. hmmmm buy a good e46 330d for 3k thats not really guna loose much more money thatll easily do another 100k without problems or botched recalls.
not forgetting the 330d is an awesome lump with 200bhp and oodles of grunt. at 120k to 150k anything that is going to go wrong on these has already been fixed. plus its so much more involving to drive and own. the e46 is a damned good car too.

One has to wonder why you are on the Audi forum? Have you got one or ever had one ?

To the OP - go and ask for a test drive mate and see if you can live with it to start with !

I'd second an E46 330d as a nice car.
That said, I sold mine and got an A3.

The older diesel's had some head issues. Most have gone by now.

Newer diesel had injector and dpf issues.

You won't buy many cars that couldn't possibly have a problem.

IE the E46 Diesel's had manifold flap issues, some went as far as breaking, going into engine, and destroying it.
