Winter tyres NOW on

I AM running 235/35 ZR19 (VREDESTEIN Wintrac 4xtreme) tyres Front and Rear: I did so last year and am again this year; what's the problem?

Check mytyre.co.uk: they list 10-tyres in the 235/35 (ZR/W/Y) 19 range from £91.20 to £285.90 each including VAT and delivery to your door.

The tyres I'm using (Vredestein) are priced at £146.50 each, including VAT and delivery.

For me, mytyre.co.uk provided a first class service/delivery.

I have used Hankook Ice Bear W300 a very good cheap option, and very very good tyre wears well and grip and stops well on ice.

Thanks for the advice. I have gone with [FONT=Avenir LT Std, sans-serif]a set of Michelin Pilot Alpin PA4 tyres. Saw the comments about MyTyres too late, having already ordered. Not the cheapest but the dealer is chipping in 50% as a goodwill gesture for the brake squeal issue...[/FONT]

In Germany it's a legal requirement to fit winter tyres, Audi have standard 18" 5 rotor RS3 wheels with winter tyres fitted at €550 each. Tyres are rated at 240kph so won't limited you too much on absolute speed. Also note the standard Audi winter tyres are same spec front and rear, it's only the summer 19" rims that are wider at the front.

This is my second winter on these wheels and tyres and no, I do not have any problems with clearance, etc.

Here in Germany most folks have a complete winter wheel/tyre sets - much easier to swap complete wheels. Standard Audi winter wheel set for the RS3 has 225/40 R18 92V XL Dunlop SP Winter Sport 3D AO, these tyres are left right specific but same spec front and rear on 18" rims. Lowest temp I've run mine at so far was -16'C and they coped well with the recent snow, but don't limit me on the Autobahn for speed - V spec tyres are rated at 240Kpm[FONT=Verdana, Helvetica, sans-serif].[/FONT]

Drove over to Switzerland on 22 with my recently sourced MAM 18" wheels (thanks Dave) and Goodyear ultra grip 8 performance winter tyres. It was pouring the role 10 hour journey and the tyres were great. Been up to Chamonix tonight and at -3 and freezing snow they were great, I'm hoping to get some more snow use before I head home. Will post some pics as I think the car looks great on the winters and tempted to get the 19" versions for summer use.

My set was approximately £1200 all in and having had them on the S3 can't rate them enough.

The OEM suggested sizing is on the drivers side door when you open it, not on the petrol cap.

Well, got the Michelin PA4s fitted at Micheldever tyres for just over a grand on Friday and there is a very noticeable difference in stopping and cornering capability but no noticeable reduction in speed or noise. For reference, I got the same spec as the summer tyres, i.e. more narrow at the rear. Note, that £500.00 of this was a contribution from the dealer for my well documented issues with the car, brake squeal being the primary gripe... Now, bring on the snow!

The suggested size rating made no sense to me at all and the manual doesn't make it clear either. In addition, Audi have been telling me something about only getting R02 tyres, which don't seem to exist for winter tyres... Michelin PA4s seem great though.

I too am running 235 width winter tyres on the rear with no rubbing issues. They are 235/40 R18 tyres though as I elected for 18 winter rims. If you are struggling to find 8Jx18 ET45-50 rims with 57.1mm bore give Keith at Revolution a call, they had a few ideas for me before I got the set of R8 replicas I did. Or you could get a set of replica 19" rotors on E-bay for sub £400.

Wouldn't worry about RO2's either, I sourced a slightly used (7mm) set of Continentals TS810S's for £280 and they are N1's which is for AMG Merc's and give more than decent wheel rim protoection. Not had any issues with the tyres and got 4 for pretty much the price of 1 brand new one!

Summer wheels and tyres back on, BLIMEY! the ride difference - thought I'd over-inflated the tyres the ride was so 'hard', but no 41/39psi 'cold' as specified.

TBH they hasve been good for anything up to 11 and then they start to feels skitish so end of the month and then I'll switch.

BUT P_G, as I'm sure Kohaku will vehemently endorse, I'm so bl**dy old that I don't need/have to be out first thing in the morning to go to... where did you say? Oh yes, I vaguely remember, work!

Anyway, ambient temp's down here in Staffordshire are NOW forecast @ 10 to 12ºC, so summer wheels and tyres are now on.

However, just in case, I'll be leaving the winters on the TT for the month of March, so I DO agree with you, really....

I agree, with the weather you can need winter tyres one day and summer tyres the next. Hard to know when to change!

Way too early to think about summer tyres yet, still well below 0'C every night and 10cm of snow here in Bayern, but the autobahns are clear so can still get the turbos nicely spun up on the way to work.

Will be keeping mine on until I've driven back from Geneva car show. Sooooo many exciting cars to go look at!

As an aside 18" wheels suggested by manufacturer for 2 reasons....

1 chains should you need to fit them will not work on 19" wheels

2 (I think) when driving in snow and the snow freezes onto wheels overnight I've seen wheel arch linings get ripped out when people drive off, not checking if the slush, snow collected when driving on the white stuff freezes to the tyres and wheel arches. 18" wheels give you a little more room for the stuff to freeze and not stick to the wheel arch linings...

Plus it is easier to get winter tyres for 18's rather then 19's. May change mine back after Geneva, more likely the weekend after though. Brave man driving to Geneva for the show, Sleazyjet far quicker and cheaper! Just got stand passes for a few of the manufacturers so should be a good year at Geneva.

Not fussed about LaFerrari, it's an ugly car, even more so than the P1. And TBH the treatment we have had at the Ferrari stand for the last 3 years has been poor so we haven't enquired this year. Go to Rolls Royce or Lamborghini, they know how to look after their guests.
