Exhaust Tips Corrosion - Anyone suffering the same?

Washed the RS today. Got the wire wool out and metal polish. Rubbed and rubbed until my fingers were nearly bleeding.. I just couldn't get them to come good. They almost look pitted in placed. Cars only done 12k.

Yep, mine are pretty much the same at similar miles. A brillo pad will remove the carbon deposits and some (Autoglym for me) metal polish will bring the shine back but it does take some real effort.

I'm approaching 14k miles and have got a variety of cleaning/detailing products arriving tomorrow - will let you now what I find. Never having cleaned the exhaust tips before, the soot may have insulated from damage, or alternatively I may find much worse...

The secret is in the preparation. I didn't do anything to my first set then tried to take carbon deposit off with Autosol etc and polish off the black chrome application on them. This time have sealed them with 3 coats of G-Techniq C5 and it is working a treat.

I though these were spot welded onto the back box tail pipes, Audi said they wouldn't change mine as a new rear box is £950 !!!!

But mine are the same as everyone elses...8k

That's already happened mate! Spent a couple of hours late last week skinning my knuckles and de-rusting the rear hubs only to come out the next morning with my little girl who pointed at the wheels and told me "eurgh, all dirty daddy, need to clean them". This time however, I'm prepared. Iron-x, Wolf's de-ironizer, IPA, wheel armour, along with Sonax spray/clay, protect and shine hybrid stuff. Hopefully, that will be job done for a few weeks/months.

I done the exact same ,thought id need to take them off to do a better job inside ,but with that wheel jack thing i hate and no trolley jack ,i will just try and do what your doing .would not mind if i had my own space ,even a garage ,but on the street with comments flying about ,like ohh you can clean my car next all that stuff ,nearly every one that walks by has to say something ,does my head in ..rant over

PS: try neat petrol, just a little mind, a couple of smears and a wipe should do it

Mine are just like yours and ARE pitted. I've tried everything (petrol, Meguiars Metal Polish and Gtechniq M1 with fine guage wire wool, a machine polish etc.) and it won't clean up the very ends where it is pitted. The rest looks fine.

Even sealed and polished the black will go off again soon!
