Paint protection ....?

hi everyone , I've been reading a lot of the threads and quite a few mention all sorts of serums / polishes/ coatings ( G1 ? Type of thingy whatsit ???? ) for your new RS3's .
Now I've never done anything with my new cars apart a from wash em , polish em and generally look after them and I like to think my cars have always looks well .
Can you please tell me what all these different coatings do , ie saves stone chips etc ?
I've ordered sepang ( but may change for red ( her indoors prefers red ) and obviously stone chips would show greatly .
.... And do you need to put them on from brand new .

Sealants have taken over from waxes imo and they're very good! Have a look at Gtechniq Exov2 or crystal serum.

If you want to use the services of a detailer they will usually do a 1 stage machine correction and then seal the paint.

Sepang should be ok (hard paint he tells me) not sure about the Red as it's a new colour, but Nardo is very soft in his opinion and our car had major etching that needed 3 stage polishing process to fix.

It's not cheap going to a detailer but I can say the glass costing finish is on a very different level compare to wax.

can i ask what glass coating you had? I've been looking at the gtech crystal serum stuff. its expensive stuff isn't it! i get the impression its not another paint protection gimmick like the dealers offer you for £500-600, but i could be wrong?

Going on what happened to my car within 48hrs of ownership, I could not recommend enough to get some protection on there as soon as possible. I only had wax but it prevented what could have potentially been a very expensive issue.

I will be arranging a re-treatment in the next few weeks and I am now considering a sealant.

I'm not sure on the actual brand of the glass coating used, but it's on a par with Gtechniq's Crystal Serum based on the work he's done in my view. It really is superb. But the Crystal Serum is definitely worth while. I would not contemplate using any dealer offered protection offering at £500-£600 - it will be nowhere near the the level of work carried out by a professional detailer.

Etching is like a deeper marking on the clear coat / paintwork beyond your usual swirls. It can not be polished out using a single stage machine fine polish which is normally enough for a brand new car.

3 stage means an aggressive polishing pad needs to be used first to take out the deep marks, but this in itself leaves marks on the surface. So another stage of fine polishing is needed again to take out these marks!! I'm not an expert on detailing processes mind you....

I just know Jay at Miglior had to spend an extra day fixing the mess that was on our brand new Nardo RS3. Shocking really, but real glad it's been corrected properly now.

Unfortunately not. Will get a standard wash and dry with what I can only assume is a bucket of dirty water with stones in the bottom and sand paper...

I imagine if you opt for their paint protection you will receive a more detailed clean, but still not to the standard you would want or expect at £500+.

They used to use Autoglym products, which are decent, but it's all in the prep. I can't imagine they use any fallout removers or clay the car before applying the wax. It will look OK because the wax will cover any defects (swirls, etc) by 'filling' them in. After a few weeks it will fade and you see everything and have to apply something yourself again.

Think they do offer sole ceramic protection, but the same applies as above, except it will last longer. Still won't be worth the £500+ though...

Yea would definitely advise you to get a local detailer to do the job for you. Will be half the price and will do a much better job.

You need to be prepared to maintain it on a regular basis to make it worth while though. Using dedicated car shampoos, jet wash/snow foam, two bucket wash method and drying safely using air/MF towels should be done to ensure it looks good for years, and doesn't cause scratches and swirls.

If you're not that fussed and would rather spend your weekends driving rather than fussing over the paint work then I would say save your money on the detail for petrol! Whatever suits you really!

My OCD is far too much to not enjoy detailing personally!

Im going to start looking round for a detailer in Leicestershire area to hopefully get the tech crystal serum stuff. Does anyone have any recommendations for my area?

I placed an order this week and my salesman knew I was keen on detailing. I asked him about not washing it before collection and he was fine with it! Just wanted to make sure I was happy collecting my brand new car even though it was dirty!

its a difficult one, One half of me wants to pick it up all nice and clean etc but then the other half of me is saying get them to leave it and get it coated by a detailer

Hmm I know what you mean...! For me, if they just hose it down, correcting water spots and cleaning dirt is pretty simple. Correcting swirls and scratches is a PITA though! However, I will be doing it myself.

If you are paying for a pro, surely the price won't change if the dealer wash it or not? Pretty sure it counts as part of a fixed priced "new car" detail? Just will mean slightly more work for them unfortunately!

yes, this is true, but what if they cause a load of damage just washing it with a gritty dirty sponge or leather etc and then i end up having to pay the detailer extra to put it right before having a glass coating (a bit like what was said earlier in the thread by chungster)

Hmm indeed....not a risk I'm willing to take personally. I can't imagine they will do a lot of damage in just one wash though...(famous last words perhaps!)

I can recommend GTechniq - worth every penny (or rather every one of the several £100).

Regarding the dealer, I suggest being totally honest with the salesman. Say that you plan to have your car treated by a professional detailer who will inspect the paintwork carefully prior to applying protection, and that your detailer asked that the minimum be done for delivery. That way they will know that you are not just the average customer who won't notice swirls etc.

I'm quite conscious about keying after seeing my ex get her new golf keyed after just a week. Really don't want to spend so much on a detail living in fear of these cretins.

Definitely won't void any warranty. A professional detail will protect the paint, not make it worse!

Could always buy the products and do it yourself for cheaper?

Easiest way is to complete enquiry form with your details on the Miglior website. We went for the new car prep, wheels off and glass coating. It's not cheap, but we've already seen how good it is - bird poo doesn't stick and soo easy to wipe off now with no effort. Money very well spent in my eyes on a car of this value. We are over the moon with the work Jay has done on our RS3.

sry Cav, may have missed your posts about your wheels, is that stance just due to wheel offset or do you also have spacers/lowered etc??
