Hello.
I bought 2013 Audi A3 8v. I have audi maps box without the sd card inside.
Seller never gave me sd card.
Im wondering if i only need maps on card or i will need activation code as well??
Does anyone have any idea??

Hi.

As far as understand with regards to the SD sat nav on an A3 / S3 you have to have the option for SD Sat Nav activated by Audi (it might of been when the car was originally ordered, in that case just get hold of the SD card) or someone with a vcds system. You wouldn't be able to get a Sat Nav SD card and just plug it in.

I presume there was sat nav activated as i found empty box of audi maps but not sure if i get maps only they will work or i will have to do the activation again. Cant get anywhere maps on sd card just to check it if they work.

I can't see why you'd need it re-activated. I am sure there is somewhere where you can check what options "came" with your car. Gotta be worth seeing if someone would make a copy of the maps SD card for you to try. Dunno if that's possible........

Well you could buy a card off eBay for 50 quid. But i wouldn't be surprised if the activation was individual card specific.
  • If you bought the car from a dealer - tackle them.
  • If private sale, go back to the seller.
  • Otherwise go to your local dealer and ask advice.
  • You could find out if the original spec included sat nav via your VIN number and MyAudi.

Private sale but that was the second owner. He said he never got any sd card with maps.
I tried to log in to MyAudi but no luck

Ask a dealer they should be able to tell you if it came with Sat Nav as an option when car was new.

I think though if you get a new card, you will need to get a dealer to "recognise" the card - I can't say for certain, but logic tells me that if not, then there would be quite a few later year Audi's broken into to pinch the SD card out the slot, as they are not cheap. But check with a dealer as I'm not 100% sure, and haven't had to change the card in the wife's 2014 A1 yet (which has the SD card Nav - mine is the HDD version on my S3)

If the second owner never had the card why did they keep the box for it? Sounds a bit fishy. New one is about 600 quid, I believe!

Empty box was in glovebox with the rest of papers. He didnt even know that there could be sat nav. He had a car for less than month

If it's anything like the Seat Leon SD sat nav the SD card is coded to the car to prevent you overwriting the latest level of map software on it.

I tried the SD card from eBay route too and sent it back after it didn't work.

You'll probably get stung latest maps on SD card and activation cost which on the Leon was around £150.

Can the Sat Nav be added through VCDS ? And activated etc ?

Certainly you won't get a sat nav card activated on an Audi for £150. Lots of threads on here suggesting around £500 - £600. Funny that you can get it on a Seat for £150!!

Re the e-Bay route. In what respect did it not work. I understood that an Audi dealer can activate them.

Audi charge approx £150 labour for activation / licensing. The card is extra.

I think you will find that only applies if you buy the card from Audi. If you get one for £50 off eBay they will charge you more. Only going by what folks have said on this forum.

I requested a breakdown on the pricing when I purchased my car as £499 (list / rrp) is a lot just for Sat Nav. When I enquired about map updates a few months back my dealer quoted £350 as you have to buy a new card / licence and then £150 activation. When I asked how much to activate and licence a card sourced by myself I was quoted £150, as long as the card in question had not been previously activated and coded to another car.

The SD Card is made up of x2 partitions one of which is hidden and contains all the related component protection which dealers cannot recode, it's done online from their server. The 2nd partition is the map data which not only for the A3 but for two other models, possibly A1 and Q3.

That's very interesting because you can get supposedly unused cards off eBay for £50. So it would seem possible to get sat nav installed for total of £200 - within the realms of Christmas present I'm thinking.
My car goes in for it's next service soon, so I will enquire.
However I suppose you take a risk that the card will be either used or faulty etc.

I am pretty sure folks on here have been quoted a big price just to activate.
Thanks for the feedback - interesting.

Dealers tend to hate retrofit woks, even more so when the parts are not purchased from them, so I bet some are inflating the prices as a way of saying "we don't want to do it" or even "we don't know HOW to do it" lol

So no matter that sd card comes with activation code. It still needs to be activated by dealer. Im confused now. Sorry

It needs to be coded / component protected to the car by the Audi online dealer system. This is for licensing and also so no one can take your card and use it in another car.

Just rang Audi Ireland. They told me €305 for 2015 sd card + €75 for sat nav update to make it work.

Interesting is when i said ive lost sd card he said if he could order for me old 2013 sd card it would work with no activation need.
Just wondering if thats true.

Btw anyone here have tried to update software??
I found new software version k3151.
Would that be easy to update?

I used my windows PC and got the file no problem.

Just found this on some website:

"MSTD_EU_AU_K3151 firmware does not have a few options like the Sub woofer control and surround sound settings if your car this installed ...."

Just been through about 15 pages from that forum thread and it looks like the FW's are legit and work, however not one mention of anyone with an 8V completing the update. It's all peeps with A4/5/7's and Q3/7's. Might be worth trying the update if you feel brave.

Interesting forum that one, loads of information in there. Thanks for linking it :)

No problem at all.
i'm considering on if do the update Or not.
I'm thinking also if go to dealer and buy new sd card and get it updated

When I asked my dealer about map updates they told me that the standard procedure is to also apply any available software updates to the MMI also. They also told me that any and all non-factory (VCDS etc) codings will be wiped in the process.

Could be a couple of possibilities:
May be a 'working' non final version?
May be one for the standard sound system?
May be one for a revision of the 5F hardware; loads of variants exist.

I have non-tech pack but Audi Sound System MY14 (so DAB as standard) with version MSTD_EU_AU_P3151 (P not K) and have the subwoofer settings.

My car came from factory with an earlier firmware version and was updated by dealer to P3151 during a service, so the 'K' does not signify dealer firmware update.

Hey. i too have this issue . well kind off.
so i got my audi a3 63 plate back two months ago. from carshop . to my own mistake i believe it had nav becuase the button was there but it wasnt stated on the sale(my bad)
but i asked them about it they said contact audi . soo reluctant as the old saying goes, "audi charge"
well i rang. so my car didnt have nav activated.
to have nav activated i would need to by the sd card of of audi or they wouldnt install. i believe it was £100 pennys . then i believe she said £575 for the licensing. she didnt mention any Labour. good because its a 10 minuite job if you have thr equipment.

my new question is . ive got an obdeleven that codes. and ive got my engineering green screen open.is there not away to flash new software over the mmi software i mean i love my audi but my mmi system lets it down. my previous ( girls car from a horrible brand name i shall not utter. had video and bluetooth apps for navigation. (i hated the navigational system becuase it relied on my mobile and if i wss gonna use mobile maps id choos3 google map)
but i did manage to jailbreak that infotainment system and change lots of it.
back tooo the point.
my obdeleven can long code.
is there a line that turns the nav from off to on
or do i have to find it my self
