Cold start and short run "rattle" sounds

sounds like a cracked manifold or leak in the downpipes to me.

if im correct, the manifold is the starting part of the engine which connection to the exhaust, the bit that looks like theres 4 tubes going into one correct?

and the downpipe is the pipe just after that

anyway of a garage checking either to see if that is the issue? or is it a case of spending hours dismantling both?

With the bonnet open, look on the left hand side, you will see the exhaust manifold, turbo and cat. Start the engine and see if there is any noise from that area, this will start to narrow down your search.

just me thinking, wouldnt it be on the right since the sparks are on the left? or is it under the sparks?

I hear numerous things wrong.

First it has a horrible miss so id check plugs and coil packs as they renowned for popping coil packs unless they on the latest revision then they not so bad.

Whats the mileage on the vehicle?

That second video sounds like your timing chain and tensioner.

Also what oil is the vehicle running on ? what year is the vehicle and lastly when last was the cam follwer changed or checked?

coils were fresh install about a month ago to the new revised ones by audi in Salisbury. and at the same time they reported the cam chain tensioner was fine. how ever is that different to the timming tensioner?

nearly 190k

car as stated on the video title is a b7 (2006) and its had fresh oil put in but no idea what type.

"horrible miss so id check plugs and coil packs " i have the vcds would this see if its missing? and how do you tell when it is missing

as stated in the vids description, the louder knocking sounds like its near the rear coil/plug area and the lighter knocking seems to be the front part moving

and heres another one with another issue, but maybe its standard

Ok so ive done some experimenting with my vcds and its come up with some faults.

how do i add the files onto here without doing a copy and paste with the text files , as ive also got excel files aswell.

Listening to those videos you have posted..

The first one for sure sounds like the chain and tensioner possibly cam follower.

The second video of the buzzing noise or zing noise is normal so thats nothing to worry about.

Thats alot of miles, and if the chain and tensioner has never been replaced I would possibly say that your issue is right there.

As for coil packs its good that you have the revised ones but as i say its still has a miss but this could all be related from the tensioner being out abit.

With out making it too complex there is rougly 3 tensioners on the vehicle.

- At the bk of the engine for the cam chain tensioner.
- Front of the engine tensioner for your cambelt
- One at the bottom of your engine for the chain that drives your oil pump.
- There is another tensioner that controls your auxiliary belt but that one doesnt come into play for this diagnostics.

Thanks for all your responses.

So what is the rattle snake tail sound?i know you said its normal but ut would be interesting to know what it is.

Also what is the ling beep after the engine is turned off

Im not to sure as to what you asking. As I said the noise from the second video is normal. Aka when you turn off the vehicle you hearing the long beep noise as you call it. = Its is just related to the electronics as well as the the direct injection.

As to the rattle snake tail sound not sure when I used that analogy let along said its normal. If i were to guess you referring to the first video of the 2 recently posted videos which again the "rattle snake tail sound" is the chain and tensioner in the back because of the slack in the chain its causing slap and you are hearing multiple frequencies of noise from the chain, tensioner, cam follower etc as its all in the same housing which would be causing the snake tail rattle sound.

hopefully that helps

Hi;it was my original comments that stated the rattle snake tail sound. And i was reffering more to the 1st and 2nd clip ie when i press the throttle and let go,always sounds like it comes from the bottom where the camera was.this sound also happenes even with the slightest blip of the throttle.

okay to comment on the first and second clip. the noise on the over run you are hearing is the chain and tensioner. because when u reving the engine is taking up the slack in the chain and when u let go its the noise of the chain is getting loose again and potentially hitting the housing of hence why it has that like hissing grinding noise.

last but not least you will say but thats at the top of the engine. and its coming from the bottom. well its actually coming from the top. the noise is against the firewall and the noise resonates down. hence why it sounds like its there but its not. and my advice is I try avoid reving your vehicle like that if you at least want it to last. Because if that chain snaps you might as well scrap the car because a 06 audi 2.0tfsi with 190k miles with a snapped chain is going to be worth 1-2k at best.
