Am I correct that this "active sound system" was introduced on facelift cars?
Also, early versions were in the exhaust system but current version is through the car's speakers?

Soundaktuator is a device on the firewall between engine bay and cabin. At least it is on the S5's....

Found a youtube vid of the same device fitted in a Golf.
Pretty sure this all started in 2013 on B8 Chassis.

I thought this "soundaktor" was only in the S4, not the A4? Is that correct?

It looks interesting, but from the product notes:

  • suitable for all A4 8K and A5 8T with one rear muffler
So that would rule out the S4/S5 along with the 3.0TDI, 2.0T and 3.2FSI :-(

Edit: Forget that - Just found the other link for twin exhausts - doh!

The start of all this was the vacuum operated by-pass flap "Sports Mode" for exhaust noise. (B6 S4) , This made actual noise by by-passing one of the silencers. A variation on this was the exhaust-operated device (Kufatec).
Audi's from 2013 seem to use a vibrating "speaker" device bolted to the bulkhead to give more noise to the occupants. This is operated by it's own electronic module. Currently, cars seem to be using the car's own sound system (speakers) to give exhaust noise to the passengers.
Even some Diesel Cars have this fitted now, so that they sound "sporty"!!
These devices can be de-activated using VCDS.
Personally I find all this ridiculous!
Looks like Pre-facelift has no "false noise" devices.
If you want noise - fit an aftermarket Exhaust System (with increase in bhp too).

Just to clarify, B8.5 models (S4 & S5) got the Soundaktor, which is the bulkhead 'speaker'.

If you dont want it, just pull the fuse out for it, which is innthe side panel of the dash (drivers side). I had it removed on my old S4, after i changed the exhaust.

The other style system is the speakers in the exhaust. I sold my B8.5 S4 and bought a C7.5 A6, 3.0 Bitdi. On these engines, they come as standard with the speakers in the back boxes, and suprisingly it is actually a decent sound. Ive since bought a Kufatec sound booster model, which lets you cycle through 7 different tones for the exhaust.

Never liked the idea of artificial exhausts, but it isnt as bad as i thought it would be. My A6 is running just over 400bhp, so i like to think it can pull it off :)

I've got VAG COM. Do you have the procedure to deactivate it through VCDS Penttis? Thanks for any help.

14. To mute the Soundaktuator

A9 Structure Borne Sound
Adaptation 10
At Channel drop down choose “Volume of structure borne noise actuator” (only choice)
Enter a value in the proper box (0% = mute )
