Hey gents,

If I manage to end up getting the S4 I wanted to get the HUD as well but wanted to get people's opinions on it that have it or have had it recently in other Audi's (I assume they're comparable systems...). Is it a worthwhile option of just a gimmick that's not worth the additional money?

I was also wanting to check that it's still visible if you wear polarised sunglasses as I've heard that some systems vanish when you look at them through polarised glasses?

Thanks in advance!

It was one of the options I wanted so went for it over the Matrix Headlights. I think it's excellent great to have the sat nav directions, speed, and speed sign recognition all displayed, saves looking down at all while driving, although sometimes I wish I could have the rev counter in there too.

Not tried it with sunglasses on, not had the change to break out the oakleys yet!

It was mainly for the speed and directions that I wanted it for, so that sounds like it would be of use to me.

If you get a chance to pop the Oakleys on (provided they're polarised lenses) and have a look to see if the HUD is still visible I'd appreciate it for sure. :)

I bought my allroad from dealer stock, to beat the April tax changes, so mine came with HUD. I thought that it was just a gimmick to be honest, until I started driving the car, but I absolutely love it. I really do like having the speed on the windscreen right in front of you, especially with the massive amount of data you can put on the main instrument display.
A definite +1 from me.

Ian

You need to try it for yourself. For me it's a gimmick but that's just a personal opinion. If find it totally unnecessary but if you don't then that's fine.
It's one of those options that will appeal to the individual so must be tried in person.

I had an A7 demo for the weekend that had heads up, not a fan to be honest and defo not keen on the price tag £900, not for me!

I had one on the test car I drove and was impressed, however at £900 it's a expensive option. There is though a reason why it costs so much as I believe they fit a different windscreen to the standard one...

I thought it was a gimmick when I saw on my demo car but after a few days driving with it I was hooked.
I would definitely have it again, although at £900 it is quite expensive I find it makes following speed limits and NAV directions as well as the adaptive cruise so much easier and I can have my VC set to maps maximised so I can see if there are holdups on the road ahead.
The actual speed and speed limit are displayed next to each other on the HUD making obeying speed limits very easy as you can instantly check both.
On the dash they are not next to each other and therefore not that useful.

Its a definite + to me but just depends if you are happy to the price for it.

The HUD brightness seems to respond to ambient light levels so when its bright outside the HUD gets brighter to so I doubt there will be an issue with using shades.

I was told they won't work with polarised sunglasses ?

Sorry, forgot to say in my earlier post - I tried some sunglasses earlier today, and I could still see the HUD without any problems.

Some won't because they are just pieces of plastic in front of the screen, however knowing audi's obsession with over engineering they have probably taken that into account.
Having said all that a quick search on google isn't good for any system unless the A4's system is different..

You say that, but my climate screen partially disappears when I put on my polarised sunglasses in the A4 ;)

Tried the Oakleys tonight, yeah okay not the best test but could barely make out the HUD with them on, so might be mileage in not working with polarised lenses

Thanks for giving that a shot for me TripleD. If you can't see it when the sun is out and you have your glasses on then I think that I'll give it a skip to be honest. That's the time I'd want it the most as it's likely when I'd be out for a hoon, I imagine that I'd be much less inclined to rely on it when commuting to work and back.

I'll maybe see if my local dealer has any with it fitted to get a final feeling but I think that you just saved me £900 with your help! :)

Just ordered a pre made S4 that had this option ticked. Not really sure if I will like it never used or tried a HUD.
