As the title says it's been five weeks since I parted with my much cosseted Sepang S3 Sportsback.
I'd had my S3 for three years and generally thoroughly enjoyed my period of ownership. It's only warranty visit was for paint flaking off the rear bumper after a few months.

Like some others I had never been impressed with the handling and ride of the S3, after having had performance cars for very many years I never felt Audi had endowed the car with the handling ability they do on other models. Even the Golf R is much better. Sorry but this is only my opinion. I knew it shortcomings when I bought it and 99% of the time found it a delight to own and a delight to drive.

I've changed it for a new Ford Focus MK3 RS. How that been? If your not open minded and not really interested, now is the time to start reading another post. After all it is an Audi forum. I was asked to pop in here now and then. After all I've been a member for quite a few years!

There's no doubt that overall quality and attention to detail is not close to Audi's very fine standards. But Ford have very much made this a drivers car. The handling is a revelation, the level of lateral grip is just outstanding, apparently easily reaching 1G of lateral force. Suspension is set for handling and grip and not comfort, takes a few trips to get used to this but body roll is almost non-existent. There are adaptive dampers fitted and in 'Sport' mode it will remove your fillings on anything other than a race track. Brakes are also stunning, the driving position is quite high and not as comfortable as an S3 but the Recaro standard seats, which are a mix of cloth and leather are so comfortable. I don't miss the awful position of the S3 accelerator pedal at all, that was becoming more of an issue for me as time went on, on occasions causing cramp in my lower leg.
Performance? Difficult to say as I'm running in but on my long test drive it was obviously quicker than an S3 but not as much as you'd think looking at the numbers.

Cars I looked at and drove were ...... Golf R, AMG 45, Honda Civic Type R, second hand low mileage M2, I did consider waiting for a new RS3.and the Focus RS. I didn't consider another S3.
I'll keep an eye on the forum, who knows I might get yet another Audi in the future.

Good honest write up, and judging by some comments on this forum about the S3 and also taking into account the reviews about the cars you have driven makes your observations to be right.

Already noted above, but pictures or it didn't happen!!

Not sure about it being faster than the S3, yes it has 40bhp more but I think it may feel faster due to the less superior interior quality etc. I've 'raced' many a new shape RS and the S3 has had the edge every time. That being said, if I was in the market for a manual hot hatch, the RS would be my first choice. S-tronic S3? RS doesn't stand a chance.

Good honest write up. I did test the rs and although its not something i would want as a daily drive it certainly made the s3 feel dynamically pants and it had those superb recaro's

Its a corking drivers car and thats the point before the usual audi dribble hits about interior quality. On the subject while we are at it. I wish my s3 was as rattle free as my old focus st estate.

Enjoy the rs. Needn't say about pictures as it's already been said

we are all expecting the pictures Steve... c´mon!

I'm interested in why the Ford over the Merc, which is faster still. What did you think of the AMG handling etc vs the Ford?

Sometimes speed isn't the main criteria.
I was giving it some beans not long after getting the s3 and then hit a long piece of flowing road with several roundabouts. I was then frankly embarrassed by a blue fiesta st. It flowed round like an ice skater. Actually quite mesmerising watching.

I really am not sure what to make of that comment??? Very bizarre observation to be made certainly... As per the below comment, I had a MK3 Focus Titanium X and it was better built and rattle free compared to the A3 8P that we have that creaks and rattles and clacks from various places within.

'Perceived' interior quality is clearly not why the original poster chose the car...

I came from a Zetec S Focus to my Audi S3 Saloon and the difference in build quality is far superior on the Audi. I'm not knocking the Ford, I absolutely adored it, but wanted something a bit upmarket and obviously much quicker. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat as well as it never skipped a beat and was very economical. Each car is different though and individual cars develop individual rattles.

Before this thread dies of audism lets get back on track. The op wants a car to drive not to sit in and rub the plastics.
They all have their pros and cons.

Congrats on your purchase/switch.

It's horses for courses I feel. For many spending that kind of money, handling and driver involvement will be paramount and everything else secondary. You obviously fall into that category. Personally I couldn't live with the Focus's interior, especially at that price point. I sat in a Titanium X earlier this year and immediately thought "wtf, this is the top trim level?!".

To jump on the band wagon - where are the pics?

My mates got a new focus RS and is considering an S3 next. The focus is an absolute weapon and is incredibly fun, but for me I like my german build quality and design, and have done since a little kid so the S3 wins all day :)

But congrats on the car, glad you're enjoying it. I suppose that's what we buy them for ultimately, expensive ornaments otherwise

Having had both a Mk3 Focus ST3 and my current S3, as soon l got my S3 l didn't go Whaow this S3's build quality is far better.... Than my focus.... Because it's not, what the Audi offers over the Focus is more customisation in both colours and technology options, Fords colours and options are limited but bang for buck the Ford is great value for money,if l had the choice of fully loaded Focus RS or basic S3.... It would be the Focus RS all day long

To be very honest...a car choice has a lot to do with perception. A lot of people buy a car for the badge and how they think people will perceive them, as classy, moneyed, fast car, wannabee, etc.
The OP has stated his opinions and I respect them. I really like it when a person states he bought this car for his priorities such as handling, performance or cushy ride, lots of room, economy and not the badge perceptions.
Age also comes into the equation, I saw a parked black Civic R yesterday and if my eyes were 19 years old, I would go wow. Even with my 69 year old eyes, the brakes, exhaust and many other design features, apart from the spoiler looked impressive and a real bang for the buck against the competition.
I choose an S3 for performance, size, Stronic, design and yes colour was also important, over the competition I test drove. Those were my priorities.

I saw a standard Civic the other day (New shape) It looked a right mess, especially the rear end. To be fair, as bad as the Type R looks it was better than the standard car for me.

Good point. The S3 has a great perceived quality. for many this doesn't last and for many it does. In the cold hard reality the badge sells.

True they are ugly but on a track or fast country road the civic would leave the s3 for dead. Iv the new facelift s3 and my work mate has the R and I hate to admit it but it's a hell of a drivers car and handles outstandingly

Let's be fair we are paying over the odds for nice interiors and a car which goes fast in a straight line.

The RS has its place and both and have their ups and downs.

Now where's the bleeding pictures??

Interesting responses. I was unsure initially about posting, I fully realise it's an Audi forum having owned a number of quick Audi's I know how loyal owners can be. So thank you for not having a go at me. We all have our opinions and that's something we should be proud of.
First to answer the Gentleman who asked why not the AMG. It's a stunning car but being well over £40,000 it triggers the increased vehicle tax (which I object to paying) I didn't find it worth the extra money over the Ford, the same spec would have been around twelve grand more. I also got the feeling it's a bit fragile, unlike the S3, Golf R or the RS3. Perhaps the best car of the lot is the M2, but sadly I found it a tad too big. I would have very seriously considered an S4 had I wanted a car of a slightly larger size.

My car isn't a daily driver, the S3 had almost exactly 10,000 miles on it at three years old. Though I've had the Ford for almost two months it's never been out in the wet and has just 500 miles on the clock. So fun is higher on my list than comfort, the RS is quicker than the S3 no doubt about it, whether it's in a straight line or even more on a twisty undulating B road. The handling and steering is quite a revelation. I did get a demo car for quite some time.

As for pictures I haven't had the much of an opportunity yet but will attach a couple I took of it at the dealers before pick up.

Cheers, Steve

Love the FRS so good choice there. More of a young man's car imho, I'd look frightfully weird driving around in one ;)

@steeve - I was watching one of the youtubers with an RS - apparently the driver seat is on stilts! - but some company have a mounting kit which drops the seat down to a far more driver focussed height.. fezza is his name. He also has the dubious honour of having had his engine replaced..

fair play to you @steeve mate....takes some trousers balloons to come on here and wave the Ford stick about with some of the fanboys....first things first we all love cars....and looks like you picked a belter. Love the colour.....as Bristle said much nicer not being "that colour"....
I actually dropped into Ford dealer here the other day....starting to think about changing....had a sit in a new ST....Recaro seats....wow....had to prize me out with a stick mind.....but felt special....$39k sticker....mentioned RS, but that was a special order....prolly $50k plus....I'm with you on driver involvement/fun being at top of my list....I mean sat in stationary traffic, who cares what bucket you're driving.....I just know if i get another Audi I will need to significantly modify it to make it more what I want....have fun and great hearing from you
