AMI and Apple Devices

Hi all, I’m about to (March) pick up my new S5 - coming from a BMW 435D, having previously owned to A5 3.0 TDIs before that. In the previous A5s you needed a special lead to connect and iPod - in my BMW I use the lead that came with the iPod!

Although I have an iPhone I keep that in my pocket and leave an iPod in the car connected via usb for music only. So, my questions are....

What lead can I use?
Will my rather old (non-lightning connector) iPod still work or do I need a newer one?

Mine came with a usb to lightning adapter. A nice one with a stretchy cord. You could easily swap it out for a normal usb cable if you wanted though. If you have the phone box like I have then you also get two USB ports (albeit not 2 cables)

Your old iPod should work although not via the Apple CarPlay. I suspect it would work in the same way as the SD does, but someone else my need to confirm. You’ll need your own usb to Apple iPhone 4 cable

As long as I have access to playlists and podcasts I’ll be happy! I’m not interested in CarPlay tbh. I’m sure I’d read somewhere though that the car wouldn’t even ‘talk’ to the old style Apple devices that don’t use the lightning connector?

Same here, reminds me of the very old house phones or headphones I asked if one was included a week before collection, they asked which phone I had.....Apparently they are £80!!!! Yeah OK! No wonder they never mentioned it before I did if they are that price!!!

Siri works via the steering wheel even if you just have your phone in your pocket

That’s what I thought - iPod 5th gen and upwards (with
Lightning connectors are the only ones to work).

However, I bought my missus an iPhone 6 a while ago and she’s got a pink 5th gen touch that she doesn’t use so she’s said I can have that! So I’ll have the same setup as in my current BMW. iPhone connected via Bluetooth for calls (saves me getting it out of my pocket and plugging it in every time) and iPod via usb in (and left in) the arm rest for music - happy days - well in 46 of them it will be!

Just need a case for it now to cover the pink!

That's a good idea, not thought of that! I have two old iPods that aren't in use, but they may be too old as they are not lightning connections.

You could also use an SD card for your music, that's what I use for shorter trips when I don't want to use the phone/spotify.

I transferred loads of music to the hdd last time around but it’s the playlists from iTunes that I miss. I’m still very old school in that I don’t do Spotify, Deezer and other streaming apps - I prefer to buy albums on iTunes and always have access to them. I’ve got a few playlists that randomly select tracks I’ve not listened to in ages but used to really like, which always beats listening to the missus or daughter whinge.
