Unplugging S3 Exhaust valves

Thanks Josul
I presume doing it this way will not result in error codes? Otherwise you need to invest in deletion modules and caps
That's right mate, no errors this way.

Make sure the valves are open by looping through the drive select before coding.

You mean put the car in dynamic and then connect it up and follow those steps?

Yes, but you need to loop through the drive select to make sure it's in dynamic. If the car is in dynamic and is switched off, when you start the car again it's not in full dynamic mode. You need to loop through the drive select to re select dynamic mode.

got it mate - at the moment I drive in efficiency mode mostly (my friend laughs at me) as I'm stuck in traffic on the school run

Gonna do this on Thursday, luckily my mechanic friend has the latest VCDS so gonna go that way :)

I went out for the day yesterday and under normal driving the car sounded so much better. It sounds sporty when driving normally, not ott, just how I would have expected it from the factory. No extra noise once cruising, just when accelerating through the gears. Didn’t seem to effect fuel consumption and weirdly made the car feel more responsive at low revs which I assume is because it doesn’t sound so muted.
Tbh when I had my s3 and I tried this mod I didn’t notice too much difference it did give it a nice little burble though, tried it on the rs3 and it just sounds like a straight through all the time and I prefer it with the valves working

Right loving this mod but worried about insulation tape coming off connectors in the wet.

Can anyone confirm whether it’s possible to code them open with VCDS on 2018 cars? It’s not on OBDEleven.

Otherwise does anyone have any links to these blanking adapters I’ve seen mentioned. Looks like you can get them for male and female ends so everything is fully protected but can only find them for rs4/7

I have the ASR module in mine with the optional dash button to chamge the mode. Obviously it's a lot more expensive way of doing it but it's a proper solution.
I was a bit underwhelmed at first with this mod, maybe I was expecting a night and day difference, but now ive got used to it it does give a nice rumble and makes it a little more throaty

Ju is that FL or PFL? My car was done this evening, going to pick it up tomorrow so looking forward to hearing the difference

Yeah looks the same. I have the AWE SwitchPath system, same concept..

Cheers. What is the install process? And does it stay on the setting last used or do you need to switch the flaps off every time you start the car?

Just get the flaps open "manually" by putting the car into dynamic and making sure they are open (finger into exhaust usually does the trick).

Then unplugging the cable from the valve motor on either side. Now you can turn the engine off as the motor will be open and won't close.

Then just connect the system up to the car, put the caps over the disconnected OEM cables to prevent errors/things getting in the cable. Cable tie the cables so they will not be touching any hot areas and cable tie the 'box' part somewhere (mine is basically right at the back of the car by the bumper).

Sadly it doesn't remember the last setting and I need to open them every time I get in the car (which is 100% of the time as I only close them for motorway journeys). It comes routine so not the end of the world.

With the ASR system it plugs into the passenger side footwell.
You can set the default to always open, always shut, original factory or last setting used.
The only thing you have to be careful of is having them shut all the time and having a blast around in the car, in which case you'd need to remember to open the valves. As they'll be open all the time anyway then that won't matter.
Also if you use the optional dash button it gives you a visual status of which mode you are in

Cheers for the above info guys. Is the ASR system a simple install? And work with face lift ?

It's a very simple plug and play install if you just go for the basic unit as it's all contained behind the passenger footwell trim.
It gets a little more difficult if you fit the centre switch as you need to run a cable over the glovebox and change the switch panel

Had it done yesterday, seems like there's more of a growl but I wouldn't say it's ridiculously noticeable. Going on the motorway today so will see if the sound gets annoying. Might look into removing the fake sound maker (whatever its technical name is)

Well my adapters have arrived to blank the cables off but still waiting on my delivery of obdeleven to wipe the error codes

However I’ve just seen there is an update for the app and now the exhaust flap mod & parking sensor display mod are now there as an app which wasn’t there before

Anyone know if this app works as both are mods I’d love to be able to control through my tablet

Sorry for bringing up the old thread, I just don't want to start a new one in order to ask a few valve related questions.

Does anyone know if all the S3 have the exhaust valves? I saw an S3 muffler without the valves, so I was wondering whether it was a copy or there was an option without the valves, perhaps PFL. Does anyone know the answer?

Is it possible to remove all the valve system or open the valves manually on a non-fitted muffler and make them stay that way permanently?

I would appreciate any advise. Thanks.

All s3’s from the factory have the valves. If the exhaust you’ve found doesn’t have them then it’s aftermarket. If you fit aftermarket without valves then they’ll always be open. And you can unplug the connectors to keep the oem valves open at all times

I'm collecting an A3 S-line after two weeks and I'm going to upgrade the rear end with the S3 diffuser which requires a quad exhaust. There is a shop that sells an aftermarket diffuser and a S3 muffler in one set. I'm choosing between this set or a separate purchase of a diffuser and a pre-owned oem S3 exhaust. The end price would be similar in both cases, but if I bought an oem muffler, I would have to ensure that the valves are open. But how could I make it sure?

Look at the beginning of this thread, you can either manually unplug the valves (assuming that the A3 has them!) and either tape them up or buy blanking plugs, or you can get someone with VCDS to code them open for you (I went down this route, tidier). There's a VCDS map on this site so you can find someone local to you :)

@HertS3 , I read the entire thread and find it very helpful for an S3 owner. But I have a different/reverse situation. I can't switch to dynamic in order to open and then unplug the valves because the A3 doesn't have them. If I bought a used S3 muffler, the valves in it would be in a position as they were when a car ran the last time. I assume they would be closed. Or would they be open? What is the default position of the valves anyway? Do they close or open when you turn off the ignition?

I guess it would be possible to remove them, at least the upper part that manages the curtain. But would the curtain remain inside the pipe? If it was closed, would it be possible to open it manually?

I know my questions sound weird, sorry for that.

Does the A3 have Audi Drive Select? If not then it might be more complicated.

The exhaust valves are open when the car is in park/neutral and stay open up to (IIRC) 1500 rpm, after that they close until around 3500 rpm then they open again.

I don't know the answers to your questions about the curtains but I would suggest you go down the VCDS (coding) route to keep the valves permanently open, this is a much tidier solution.

The A3 Sport has Audi Drive Select. But it has a simple muffler without valves, so there is no wiring to open/close them.

Oh then this is beyond my knowledge; you can probably get the valves to remain open but I'm not sure how

I’ve bought the blanking plugs and I’m about to do this to my PFL S3. I’ve looked under the rear of the car and found the plugs difficult to access especially when I have little time during a cold start in dynamic to unplug both sides before the flaps close (I presume that’s what I can hear after approx. 30 seconds). Are there any tips to do this?

They stay open when you switch ignition off. Did mine again Monday night. Have the same blanking plates

If in dynamic then they will stay open when parked as far as I know. I never did mine quickly but they were open for sure.

It can be a bit fiddly but not too bad. I found the right tips to be harder as had to put ark basically above the tips to try get to the cable.

Ok so cold start in dynamic then switch off after a few seconds in park? Valves will then be open?

I just left the engine running.
Turn on, go into dynamic (if already in dynamic then toggle through to get to it again). Get out of car with engine still running

Then spend as long as you need to unplug.

I am trying to use OBDEleven to set the exhaust flaps to be open on a 2019 S3 and just get "(31) function not available". Anyone got the mod to work on a 2019 S3 by any chance? I did follow the steps to starting the car in Dynamic then turning off etc, so just seeing if it is me or the car :)

Got this exact same problem lately! I resolved it by clearing the app cache and when inside the engine module if would go into "Readiness" a couple of times and back into long coding. This somehow establishes the connection and then it's possible to code again. I'm sure it's just a bug they haven't sorted yet.

Unfortunately that made no difference :(. Maybe a slight difference in the 2019 model...
