Hello - so I got an R8 wheel with the newer smaller airbag. I have a 2016 NA PFL S3. The wheel has ADS and Start/Stop buttons, but I’m less concerned about those than I am getting the multifunction buttons, horn, and paddles to work.. The wheel part number is: 4S0419091E and it seems it’s also the same wheel the 2015+ TTRS got.
Available pins in my S3 clockspring are 3, 4, 7, 8, 9, 10.
The harness it came with is ok airbag wise as it uses pins 3 and 4 for the black and green wires respectively, and vag com doesn’t throw up any airbag errors and connects to that channel fine.
The rest is a mess though.
The buttons don’t work, the paddles don’t work, the horn doesn’t work, the buttons don’t light up and vag com throws up a communication error for the steering wheel.
The new harness I have has a wire for pin 1 (grey), pin 2 (white) and obviously my clockspring doesn’t have pins for those anyway so I’m hoping those are the Start/Stop and ADS buttons.
As for pins 7-12 on the old harness vs new:
Old: 7 brown, 8 blue, 9 purple, 10 pinkish, 11 & 12 not used.
New: 7 not used, 8 brown, 9 purple, 10 orange, 11 grey with red stripe, 12 not used.
Has anyone with a PFL (or FL for that matter) had any experience with these new steering wheels to know how to correctly wire up the new clockspring connector to work? My assumption is to move each of the 4 wires down one for pins 7-12, but I’d rather check before messing anything up. Seems like it’ll be a ground/earth issue with pin 7, but it’s anyone’s guess what the rest of the wires are doing. Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.

Hey man! I’ve got a PFL S3 here in the US as well. I am currently trying to retrofit the TTRS wheel into my car, as well as the Virtual cockpit. I know this is a huge undertaking but I am dead set on making it happen. Haha!

Did you ever manage to get the wheel working? My wiring layout is exactly the same as yours from the sounds of it.

Hey - sorry haven’t been on here in a while. Just saw your other thread. What’s the part number of the harness you got working? I’ve so far gone through 3 and can’t get the basic functions to work yet. Or the horn.. I’m not going as far as VC and MIB2 with mine. I have Europrice working with some guys in Germany to get the start stop and ADS to work, but to be honest I’m at the point where I just want the wheel in there and basic functions.

I was able to get this mostly sorted.

8S0 971 589 G is the harness for the airbag on the TTRS wheel. I haven't seen the back of the R8 wheel airbag, but I believe it is the same. Once I switched the ground wire in the harness, 85% of the functions work.

The only thing that isn't working is the "View" button. This will only work with Virtual Cluster, and the Start/Drive Select buttons.

Cheers! That’s the same harness I got too :) I’ll let you know how I get on with the module from Europrice. Last I heard they were having some issues with the chip that communicates with the LIN.. Sounds like you’re already way past that though with the new cluster!

Oh yeah I’ve been fighting this for months. I finally received all my parts to retrofit the Virtual Cockpit last night. Got most of it installed, just working on the coding.

I’ve been talking with some people about a wireless module for the Start/DS buttons, similar to what would be used in a detachable race wheel.

It’s looking kind of promising, I’ll let you know if I get them working!

have you checked the drive select is coded for the correct canbus? i see some modules have a choice of canbus to look for things. eg, for active tpms you have to change it from suspension to extended canbus.

Hi,
I did this steering wheel mod and have now removed the steering wheel, airbag and clockspring with wiring harness.
I had all buttons working except for the virtual dash as not fitted to my car.
Give me a couple of days and I will post pictures with part numbers and wiring changes that were made to the clockspring.

Cheers

Hector this would be amazing! Thank you!

Thank you for these! My questions are...

- what pins do the grey and white wires go to in the yellow connector?
-do you have any pictures of the clockspring and how it was modified, or if there was an additional wire added to it.
-was there any wiring modifications done to the steering wheel?

Thanks so much!

I will open it up when I get home and take some more pictures of the clockspring.

Cheers

There is definitely a modification done to the steering wheel.

The green, white, orange, and brown? wires at both lower buttons have been added on. I'm interested in seeing what was done inside the buttons.

Are you selling these parts?

Hi,
I managed to open the clockspring and the wires you see which have been soldered on to the board went to the Start/Stop Button on the Centre console of my car.

I have not opened up the buttons but, the green and white wires come from the drive select and join the orange/brown wires and go into the Nav/Phone/Stereo controls.

Yes, all the parts are for sale, but i wouldn't split them up.

Hope this helps a bit, I am not very technical and opening up more buttons is a bit daunting for me.

Cheers

Hector thank you so much for these. It definitely helped point me in the right direction.

Looks like I know what I'll be getting into this weekend.

Your very welcome,
My car will be gone soon, but I will follow this thread and watch your progress.

I know someone who is a bit more technical than me, If I can get a hold of him I will get him to open up the buttons and get some pictures maybe in the next few days.

Cheers

That would be fantastic, just to see where things are soldered to. Seeing the pictures above really helped out though.
