High mileage 1.8T

Folks, going to look at a 1.8T 190bhp avant 2004 at the weekend with 120k miles on it.

Its been serviced every 10k miles or less for the last 7 years and I know about the sludge build up but how many people have actually had an issue with it?

Other than the sludge build up and the usual coil packs / boost hoses etc is there anything to worry about?

Just about run in nicely at 120K.
Bullet proof engines when serviced properly at the right intervals.

I would say it's the older cars that were on semi synthetic from new. Better oil (fully synthetic) and larger oil filter to bring the capacity up helped a lot, regular servicing is the key.
The PCV system is a weak point for vacuum leaks but not expensive to replace parts.

Having helped in a sump clean on an S3 with this 1.8 I would say that that you could take a risk if you don't fancy the job but there was a lot of gunge in there.I had a Bora with the non turbo which wasn't worth enough to warrant the hassle .However they are prone to oil leaks around the top where the gasket has U section.Not a big job but it was done on the S3 but again not the old Bora

Depending on price I'd got for it, do a service and make sure it has an engine flush. Inspect the oil when its dropped.
Serviced at every 10k says that it's been looked after in the right way, when was the cam belt & water pump last done.

40k ago for belt. So did the later car have some revisions to help with the sludge issue? Id clean out the sump but I know these are a pain to do. Half leather seats , s-line etc.

It has the usual rusty front wings. I was originally thinking a Tdi but would prefer a petrol if its not horrendous mpg (less than 30mpg).

Early cars had a small oil filter only allowing 3.5 litres oil capacity and semi synthetic, a recipe for disaster add 10,000 mile oil changes.
Later there was a revised oil filter allowing more capacity and they switched to fully synthetic oil and anyone with common sense would change the oil every 5000 miles.

Cool, hopefully a decent car. PLan is to view tomorrow. I did have a B5 Passat 1.8T a long time ago and do remember it being half decent on fuel.

I've had 4 different 1.8t vehicles. Best I've seen is 22mpg EVER

If you have a lead foot, you won't get 40.

Haha I had a mk1 225 quattro TT and after lots of mods it did indeed drop off to the mid 20's but probably because I spanked it everywhere

I've just bought a mint avant b6 1.8t and just over a week now and mostly seeing between 33-35 mpg
I used to have exact same car but 1.9tdi and unless on a run only ever got between 35-40mpg, but I reckon both being quattro effects the mpg compared to 2wd

I have a 1.8t cabriolet so slightly heavier car and only 163 bhp. Around town I see high twenties, on the motorway low forties and an average around thirty. My right foot is not made of lead but its not light either, I definatly enjoy the car.
