A4 b7 Cambelt change SERIOUS concern

Well guys, I'm hoping to do my next cambelt change. I'm going with the better water pump(metal) and Dayco belt kit which I think contain ins pulleys and tensioner.

BUT it doesn't contain the new tensioner shaft, and I'm hearing very mixed feelings where the shaft is concerned. Some say leave it well alone, some say replace without fail.
Either way I'm shatting myself in case it fails if i leave it and fails if i replace it.

Please can somebody enlighten me on why how when these bolts tend to fail causing severe damage.
 
Had two cars fail on me in the space of a few months due to the tensioner bolt on 2.0ll litre cars. The bolt doesn't come with the kit and should be changed for an uprated one during change whilst being sure not to strip the block in any way.

There's some detail in an earlier post of mine. Will try to dig it out when on a computer

Wow you haven't had much luck. Out of curiosity did you use the same garage for the work on each car? Also was the bolt replaced the 2nd time around, before the 2nd failure?
 
I didn't change the cambelt on the second car. It had been done when the engine was swapped at 94k.

So the first had cambelt done but pin wasn't swapped

Second didn't touch it.

I had my 1.9 into Dave at DH Automotive in Falkirk, speaking with him about my experience on the 2.0s - he said the pins should always be changed and properly torqued. Believe he was ex-head mechanic at Audi Edinburgh, so if I were you I'd get it changed and make sure it's done properly.

Yeah what I gather it's mostly 2.0 bkd engines it happens on. However I'm inclined to replace it on my 1.9 bke engine. The sake of £12 genuine audi part it makes sense. Going to clean the threads with a tap and die set, torque the bolt to 20nm plus 45° turn, then thread lock the nut on at 15nm plus 45° turn.

If anybody can advise me if my research has made sense and sounds correct that would be great.
 
Sounds fine to me.

The failures come from reusing or overtightening.

Yeah I always replace any studs where the tensioner or rollers run, better to be safe than sorry especially when they're inexpensive

I dont supoose you can clarify the torque specs are for 1.9tdi BKE? Rob has told me the belt tensioner NUT torque spec but I'm yet to confirm the actual shaft torque specs?
 
Dayco are a **** kit from China.
