I was actually looking at the M340i as a next car so this is kinda helping. Lol.

The interiors are really good now and this one is clearly rapid. And a lot cheaper than an RS4...

You'd have to really want the RS4 to justify the extra 15k based on that. Doesn't look like any real world performance advantage, they must have been up to silly speeds to get any distance ahead of each other. And, given the 340i would have previously been a competitor with the S4 (when they were both petrol) then it looks like that would be no contest.

EDIT: Side note, not been watching the carwow vids for a while now as they started to grate. Rory Reid on the Autotrader channel has been really good though and well worth watching.

Yeah, I think if was looking for another car the M340i would be my pick. Audi doesn’t really do anything new that I’d be interested in at the moment. RS4 is a bit out of my price range and the S4 wouldn’t be any different to the car I have now, in fact my diesel is probably quicker than the new S4 since I’ve had it mapped. I’ve got more bhp and torque.
Only other option in the Audi range would be the A6 55 tfsi, big car though.

Exactly my thoughts. I recognise the RS4 is technically a rung above the M340i, but when they’re that close then why not?

Yeah, I mean the two cars are different. If you was on a nice country lane or a track I’m sure the RS4 would out perform the M340i. But in real world and everyday comfort the M340i would be a good option.

Totally agree. But it would be my daily so would definitely be in the ‘everyday’ use category.

Changing the subject a bit, my car was at MSS getting the suspension tweaked and they gave me a new Mini Cooper S works manual for the day. Not driven a manual petrol car for about 10 year, It was brilliant, I forgot how much fun a small ish manual petrol car was. Zipped down the country lanes. Flash backs of my Vauxhall nova when I was 17. Definitely can’t chuck my weighty diesel about like that Mini!

Imho BMW under report their torque as mine was over 100ft2 more on a RR vs what BMW say. RS4 looks the business though!

TX.

Edit - sad how quiet new cars are though :(

Yeah I’d seen that on a few different cars. That B58 engine (I think it’s called) seems to under rate the outputs...

RS4 definitely looks more purposeful, hands down! Don’t mind a sleeper though so I’d take either if you gave them to me. Hahaha.

Depends what you look for really-the 'M-Lites' are great cars (I had 2) but compared to a Full M or an RS model then they just aren't as good. Put that BM on a twisty road and it wouldnt see which way the RS4 went frankly. This is before we get to build quality and tech etc and Audi makes BMW (even the new ones) look gash. I came from a 2017 M3 Competition which was a brilliant car, the handling was sublime (in the dry) but the build quality wasnt 'that' good (we're not talking Alfa Romeo levels but still not as good as you would expect). The tech on the B9 makes the M3 look ancient and I'm not a huge fan of BM's latest tech. Then there are the looks...anyone seen the up and coming 4 series?
Imo and having sampled all of the German AWD systems I think Quattro is The Daddy. X Drive and 4Matic are good but rely on juggling power to each corner for the best traction to get the best start. Systems are quick but not as quick as 4 wheels just all going at the same time.

I’d disagree about Audi making the current beemer interiors look gash when it’s A4’s versus 3 series. I think BMW have stepped things up significantly and having been in one for a while I really think it’s at least on par with the B9. Build quality is great in the BMW and actually felt more sturdy than my S4 in my experience.

I don’t think that the RS4 would disappear down the road on normal back road conditions. I don’t think the BMW would completely keep up, but it’s definitely not like it would be left for dead.

I would agree that Quattro is the best system (I’m still an Audi fanboy at heart), but I don’t imagine that you’d notice any difference in anything but the most extreme driving conditions.

The BMW just seems to punch above it’s weight a little bit and I imagine it would give RS4 owners a bit of a shock, and at £10-15k less.

Well I cant say I'm an Audi fanboy or any other marque fanboy at that. I've oned 3 M Cars, 1 Alpina, 3 Audi RS models (including the current) and one AMG (which was a huge mistake frankly). All of them were superb in their own right with their own strengths and weaknesses. The most complete car was a C7 RS6 and ticked so many boxes. The M Lites have been 'breathed' on by M Division and do punch above their weight but just don't match up to the full M version. I had two M135i's and the last one was tuned. The chassis was the weak spot and it was all over the road when you floored it. In the RS all that power is there.
Getting into the whole 'M-Lite'/Full M' and 'S/RS' debate and I don't want to rattle anyone's cages here.

The new s tdis would be monsters once tuned though.

My mapped 272 like urs has similar power and more torque than the new s tdis.

But I did test drive the new s7 and although mine does feel quicker, the s7 had a stronger top end and felt a lot more meaty overall.

They've definitely fiddled with the internals as the engine feels a lot less stressed and much stronger.

If ur happy to go diesel again a new s tdi mapped would be a weapon.

400plus bhp and perhaps more than 800nm.

If my mapped 272 already feels immense cant imagine wat the torque must feel like on a mapped s tdi

All depends on the kind of driving u do though as diesels are pointless if ur not doing enough miles

I know a lot of people don't like how it sounds but I though it sounded pretty good even though the sound is fake. It's still a v6 anyway so better than a petrol 4 pot imo but not better than the petrol 6 when it comes to dynamics

I'm more of an Audi guy but tbh I'm so disappointed in how badly the new rs cars are faring against the m and amg equivalents.

They're getting destroyed in every race lol and although Audi may offer a better overall package imo I don't know why they can't get it right when it comes to gearing and emissions.

It seems like u have to tune the Audi just to keep up with the competition. Ever since amg and m went 4 wheel drive their wiping the floor clean with the Quattros.

Plus the other 2 always had the edge on rolls also.

I wouldn’t say they are getting ‘destroyed’ but the Car Wow races are showing the gap has closed a lot. To me having healthy competition is always a good thing. If you’re hung up on the traffic light Grand Prix or 1/4 mile times then save some money and go buy a cheap rice rocket and get it tuned. Go insanely fast and handle brilliantly but that’s about it. I ran my Dads Subaru Impreza for a while and they really are one dimensional cars. Fastest car I ever drove was a Litchfield tuned GTR. Mental but of kit but was a plastic horror show on the inside and That’s before you get to the image problems with rice rockets as well.
With Audi you get build quality, style, practicality ++++
If you really want to do crazy straight line stuff in an Audi then pick up a C6 RS6 and take it to MRC. Stage 2 tune will see you doing 0-60 in under 3 secs and 0-100 in under 7. Not bad for a two ton barge.....

I would choose the audi purely based on looks even if it was slower than the bmw. This is the reason I chose A4 Avant and not any other brand. If you are after best performance then you should be looking for a different class of cars. You will never be racing this in competition so who cares that one was faster by 2 meters over a quarter mile, you will still beat most people from traffic lights.

I don’t know, I’m leaning towards the 3 series versus the A4 these days with the headlights being much less angular on the new A4.

Both handsome cars, just slightly leaning towards the BMW.

And the ‘M340’ isn’t even a proper M

Exactly, it’s really from the tier below. But if you were to put it up against the S4 instead, I imagine that it would pretty easily wipe the floor with it.

The M340 is a couple of grand more expensive than the S4 (when fully optioned out), but from my perspective that’s a worthwhile premium for more power, petrol power, real exhaust pipes and a slightly nicer looking overall package. Just personal preference though.

Absolutely. And I have one (M lite) in the form of X3 M40i, so same engine as M340i. I was in the market to upgrade Q5 to SQ5, but put off my diesel only amongst other things like touch screen only. BM have definitely upped their game on interiors, but as you say exterior very much personal preference. I drove the M40i and was sold.

Great deals around generally so can get some good deals on most things really

The M340i is the only real alternative to the 'proper' S4 imo. My current S4 is out of PCP at the end of the year and like many posts here I'm really not sure what to do next. I think I might just buy it out and get out of the PCP merry go round. The other option is either downsize to an S3 (Really like the look of the new ones) or if I was going like for like no question it would be the M340i.

For what it’s worth - my experience driving cars with x drive wasn’t good, on one test drive I really unsettled a 335d touring by taking a long tightening left hand, slightly off camber corner ( one I’ve driven daily for 25 years ) too quickly .... well, too quickly for the xdrive to cope with ! The shuffling of power between wheels caused the car to behave like a drunken jellyfish- it took all my skills, and I mean all of them to prevent a horrible lane crossing backwards departure through a hedge and down a huge bank- if there was no oncoming traffic to stop me !

I had a similarly unpleasant experience with beast of east snow - when an x drive became only a one wheel drive ! Not nice !

I haven’t had the same problem with Quattro although I maintain that that isn’t as good as Subaru’s when the going gets slippery

my PCP ends in early Aug on fully loaded S4 avant. Gonna keep it... give it a new ceramic coat, some new floor mats, fix the odd tiny door ding, and full valet / deep clean inside . I’ve looked at BMW, Mercedes, and all Audi offerings . I can afford a new one , just nothing Tempting. RS4 I can afford , but just can’t justify the extra. And Diesel , I’ve left that behind . What I have my eye on is a Polestar 2.... that is tempting ..

M340i is on the short list, hope to be able to drive one at the dealers when things return to some sort of normal.

My local dealership is open but I think I’ll wait until the current car is a little nearer the end of its PCP.

I did see Racing Chip did dyno runs of the M340 in various states which was quite interesting (although I know each dyno is different, it’s still neat to see the gains on the same dyno).

Stock was something like 405bhp (!!).
With just a down pipe it gained something like 20-30bhp.
And with the box on and downpipe it was putting out 480bhp.

Those are some healthy gains and would likely pull away from most cars on the road without too much issue. Just the brakes likely let it down if pushing on.

DMS Automotive who mapped my car get 470bhp just from a remap on the M340i, no modifications.
