Pan roof replacement

Hey,

so I’m having my pan roof replaced by Audi under warranty. It has been creaking going over bumps. They had a small look at it when it was in for something else and they told me it’ll be a full weeks job to pull the headlining down, rip the glass out etc. It made things worse at first (it was rattling as well as creaking) until i got it home and adjusted the 2 screws at the back of the glass. Creaking didn’t stop.

They are now replacing the cassette that it goes in. Ive had a brief look at the repair manual and ive seen it requires some of the plastic housing to be cut away with an angle grinder. They rang me today and said they didn’t realise it needed so much to be removed and dont want to do the work themselves and have now advised they are going to get a specialist bodyshop in to do the cutting for them. I feel really nervous about letting this go ahead and can’t believe that the cassette is not a properly serviceable/replaceable part.

I’m scared they may damage something, especially my paintwork or make a cut where there is not supposed to be one or something like that.

has anyone ever had a replacement cassette? I’m half tempted to tell them to put it back together and I’ll deal with the creaking rather than go through this!

O/T but this is why pano roof would never be on my Spec list.

My last one was fine. But agree it adds weight to the worst place possible on the car. I wasn’t fussed for it on previous cars but due to the 5 pot noise I wanted it for that extra cabin noise without the need to have the windows down!

Not a fan of the Pan roof myself.. did not realise it was included as part of the sports-pack. Had I known, hindsight..

adds weight, but I can pinch on off anytime to offset it (lol) - would look to add pan roof every new audi, such a nicety

Ohh dear not another one :( Mine is exactly the same sadly it get a knock over bumps and sometimes a rattle when it is open. Not a happy bunny.
Audi wanted the car for 6 weeks to do it and it would have also been going off to a body shop for some of the work. I asked if the ar would be immaculate with no interior issues and no paintwork damage etc and they could not guarantee it would be perfect so I said no.

Always something you have to accept with the Pan roof but it’s a nice option to have. Sure those without it secretly wish they had one

On a serious note I’d be very wary of anything being cut, will it ever be the same.

I love my pan roof! Couldn’t be without one now. Mine creaks slightly from time to time but nothing that’s made me think I need to get it looked at, it depends how bad it is I suppose, it can be so annoying to have a constant creak/rattle!
I definitely wouldn’t be happy with them going anywhere near my car with a grinder though :sadlike:

Mine rattles over potholes all the time. Such a shame with no rattles from elsewhere.

I don't get how hard it is to solve. Locate what is rattling against what and issue a fix like a shim or revised part. I might mic mine up and try to locate the source.

We can surely as a community find the fault of a rattle without letting Audi angle grind our cars?!

Had my Pan roof cassette replaced after several attempts by the dealer to fix the creaking and rattle using their 'special' grease failed.
I was without the car for only 3 days and the fitting was carried out on site by a specialist company. Unfortunately the creaking turned up again after a couple of days but the rattle had gone, I've got used to the creaking now and it only happens when I manoeuvre on and off my drive.
Would I spec the Pan roof again, yes I would, hearing that 5 pot noise through an open roof takes some beating.

Thanks for the reply. That’s filled me with a bit of confidence. Any nasty surprises? Mine only creaks over bumps to be perfectly honest. But few weeks left on warranty, I thought why not get it looked at.

No nasty surprises at all, the only evidence that it had been done was some excess black sealant towards the rear of the roof opening which can only be seen with the Pan roof on tilt. Would I have had the cassette replaced if I hadn't had the rattle, probably not.
At least you can let them have a look, a re-grease with Krytox may just solve your creaking.
Good Luck

A friends car back in 2016 at a Welsh dealer.

In the end they were stopped by him because of the damage they were doing to the interior.

The supplying dealer ended up buying it back and putting him in a new car.

Wonder, while its still in Warranty, press for a new replacement deal/car. Just a thought.

If I had bought the car from the dealer doing the work I would push for this definitely. But, I bought the car from an indie dealer back in February 2020, so this might be hard :( I also own the car, so no PCP deal possible...

:{ :(:(

I wouldn't have a car without a pano roof. Only problem we had was with an 8P when after a non fault accident car was baked in oven and roof rattled.. seems the glue unstuck.. Required a new cassette. Bristol Audi Bodyshop were brilliant.

Well the roofs back in. No rattles or freaks as far as I can see. Apart from niccing the headliner (a very minor Mark) which they are going to replace and breaking a piece of plastic trim, all seems good...

Good news, it's one hell of a job. Out of interest has your car been baked in an oven after any body repairs which may have caused this?

not that I know of mate! Bodywork is pretty mint!

You will not tell a decent Audi approved body repair. Late wife’s A3 was damaged when 6 months old, not even in it. Perfect repair by Bristol Audi but roof rattled after. Came down to Bodyshop oven we think unsticking pano roof cassette which rattled when it was hot. Eventually sorted. Good luck.
