Somethings happened to google maps i think. Just spoke to my mate and his has gone down too.

Not unexpected, and has actually been known about within the community for at least 18 months or more.

This was the main driver for getting Carplay/Android Auto enabled on my S7, via a non-OEM software upgrade.

Note that the s/w upgrade is only possible on facelift C7.5 models, with the MIB2 MMI system fitted (2 x USB sockets under central armrest)

If you have an earlier year car, the only way to get Carplay etc. is to add additional hardware, or replace your head unit.

With Carplay/Android enabled, you have fully integrated access to Waze (much better than GMaps) as well as a host of other apps from your connected device :thumbs up:

Glad I gave up on the sim in my car, google maps on the mmi never seemed as up to date as google maps on my phone so still use my phone for navigation

The SIM does allow access to some additional connected services.

It’s also the most cost effective way of tracking your car, if it’s stolen :busted cop:

For those with MIB2 High / Technology Pack systems there is a replacement service via a new provider. The graphics are downloaded and stored on demand but you need an update and a valid Audi Connect Licence.

VAG Car Coding is able to perform the needed update, has been rolling this out for a while actually, via genuine firmware and authorised access to the VW Group online service tool to the following vehicles and related models such as S and RS cars:
  • A4
  • A5
  • Q5
  • Q7
  • Q2
  • A3
Updates are ONLY for model year 2017 (MY17) and onwards vehicles ONLY.

A6 and A7 vehicles are not eligible. Currently awning further information re TT and R8 vehicles however we did have an R8 gen 2 v10 working with no issues the other day.

Those with MIB1 and MMI3G Plus or High / Technology Pack systems, Google Earth Overlay is no longer available and there is no replacement solution.

Community for 18months. I was never informed unfortunately. Will Audi be providing an alternate platform.

Don't look like there will be an alternative service for 4G platforms vehicles, only for those detailed above in post #8.

For those that use Android Auto, etc... I find plugging in my phone a PITA. Anyone using another phone for this, thinking of getting a cheapo phone just for this

i'm not using car play yet, i've got a brodit holder with the cable running back into the armrest, looks OEM and no hassle

Search Aliexpress for JoyeAuto wireless CarPlay and you should find a wireless to usb dongle, prices from £69 onwards. You would be looking for the all black one which looks like a mouse. While they are not 100% perfect many of my customers seem to like them.

when i first got my car a little over a year ago and updated mmi and maps to latest available then got prepay data sim etc to use audi connect and blah blah blah then found out its a load of garbage.

it was a nice touch to have google map overlay at the time but seems this is becoming unsupported boo

other audi connect services are a bit whack.

But use the simcard for the kids to use up as a hotspot and also think that it is used with my phone mirroring chromecast setup so the effort was not all lost.

So then i see the same site that sold me the firmware/maps selling android auto/carplay
selling for £450 but now trying to shift them after black friday for £300
i can get the exact thing straight from ali express sellers that look identical with all the leads etc for around £140

im thinking just giving it a bash for the fun of it as i have never had a problem with any stuff from ali

Just give it a few months, some clever person will find a workaround.

I’ve just looked on the JoyeAuto website and there are two dongles. I have a 2016 facelift A7 with MMI+ so do I need the android auto version?

The black and silver dongle looks to be for android operating system based head units. You need the dongle which is all black, example:

£75.54 51% Off | JoyeAuto Wireless carplay Apple Original wired to wireless USB Carplay Dongle iOS for Navigation/Music авто Adapter

Unfortunately I’m having trouble with this - nothing happens when I plug it into the car USB port...

I’ve a 2019 TTRS , you pair the dongle with the car as the smartphone and then pair your phone with the dongle

Assume you've paired it?

There was no Bluetooth prompt to pair it. I have a feeling the dongle isn’t what I need to give me CarPlay - I have a 2016 A7 without CarPlay and was expecting this to add it to my MMI.

My understanding is that the dongle allows you to bypass the need to physically connect your phone via a cable. Does CarPlay work with a cable?

No, my 2016 A7 doesn’t have CarPlay, I was actually trying to add that to the car, not just go from wired to wireless.

That's the problem then, the dongle, AFAIK, replaces the physical USB cable and removes the need to plug the phone in every time you use the car.

Yes I realise that now. I’ll try to return or sell the unit. I’d still like to add CarPlay to my car though!
