Speed limit display

I checked my car yesterday and as per everyone else it doesn't show the speed limit on the sat nav

Just live chatted with Audi Digital Services and similar response and he then ended it before I could challenge it:

  • According to our database You do have traffic sign recognition, but we cannot know for sure if the traffic camera recognition itself has been installed in your Audi. Please contact the UK services Department for this Technical specification

Thank you for using Audi Live Chat. Should you need further assistance, please contact us again. I wish you a wonderful day ahead! For your future reference- Our toll free number is: 0800 279 2884 Our Email is: digitalsupport.uk@audi.de
The issue I think if I understand this right is that because all A3/S3's have Pre-Sense and Lane Assist they have a camera installed and therefore Audi's system just shows that we all have Traffic Sign Recognition - If this is incorrect then hopefully somebody on here will know more.

This is so wrong if they are trying to force us to purchase Functions on Demand

They tried to say not all features are on my Audi but I said I'm looking at the digital manual via My Audi with my VIN Number

Yup, that’s the response I got too. Because the camera based speed limit info is “enabled” which just means the hardware is there but it’s not turned on, I can’t view the speed limit on the sat Nav, they’re basically trying to force me to fork out for functionality that should be there anyway.

I’ve registered a complaint with York Audi, but they’re not responding at all it would appear. Going to chase them up on Monday, if I i dont hear back by the end of the week then I’ll escalate.

Shame, they did a decent deal on the car but as per usual after sales service appears to suck.

Update I got from Audi Customer Services yesterday:

I have investigated your case further with the Master Technician at your dealer. He advised that he has looked into your concerns further, using a like for like Audi S3. He explained that the like for like vehicle also did not have the speed limit display. He does not feel that this is an issue with the vehicle due to the fact that both your vehicle and the like for like functioned in the same manner, but would be happy for the vehicle to be brought in for further investigation and a Technical Report raised if this is something you would like to move forwards with?

He also went on to advise that at this time, there are no MMI or software updates available for the vehicle due to the young age of the vehicle - Even though we all know others have had updates!!

My reply below:

It doesn't surprise me at all that he'll have the same issue, as I said in my previous emails , because all A3/S3's will have the same issue as they all have Lane Assist and Pre-Sense as standard which uses the same camera as the Traffic Sign recognition (checked this with my friend who is an Audi Mastertech at a different dealer) and therefore it thinks that system is installed, but it's not unless you have the driver assistance pack.

The manual page 220 clearly states option 10) Display of the maximum speed limit, in towns on motorways, dual carriageways and other major roads and has a little 1) which at the bottom of the page applies to cars without camera based speed limit display only, so you see he will never be able to replicate it.

To be honest this is what annoys me, in that us customers know what we should have or shouldn't have on our cars and have read the manual, but we always get fobbed off with it's a new model and we don't and the factory don't know - I'm fairly confident that this is the same software/hardware that's in the A1 and Q3 and has been for well over a year now and let's face it the new A3 is almost a year old now as well, this really isn't good enough and certainly from a brand like Audi - I don't know what is going on at the moment but they are acting like a back street car dealer rather than a premium brand.

It was always there on the previous models, and clearly should still be there as per the manual (not the brochure the manual) and therefore Audi have messed up or they are chancing their arm and will allows us to purchase Traffic Sign Recognition through Functions on Demand when it becomes available, but I for one will not pay for this installation when I've spent £**** on what's supposed to be a Premium Brand, which it certainly doesn't feel that way at the moment, and I'm not the only one who feel that Audi really are starting to not care about their customers.

Just found this under the spec for my vehicle:

Prep for dynamic road sign display for FOD so as suspected it was intended for us to pay for the speed limit anyway

  • Service indicator 30 000 km or 2 years ( variable )
  • Camera and/or distance sensor (driver assistance system)
  • Prep for dynamic road sign display for FOD
  • Hill-hold assist
  • Instrument cluster, mph speedometer -Great Britain-
  • Lane departure warning
  • Without lane change assist
  • Audi pre sense front
  • Cruise control

I've got the same in my spec, and when I queried it with the dealer got absolutely nowhere.

I'm not happy that so many features which I was expecting as standard have been locked away for FOD or as add-ons which weren't clearly described in the details

After escalating within York Audi I’ve now got Them to agree that when it’s available via FOD, providing it’s not ridiculously expensive, they’ll enable it for me free of charge. Just need to figure out when it’s going to be available now, which they’re looking into.
I would suggest being a total pain in the **** to get your dealers to do the same!

Thanks for that - That will be the route I'm going down as well

Totally agree, but what's annoyed me is I would suspect every vehicle will have this because of the pre sense and Lane Assist, so why even put in the manual

Absolutely shameful

I'll be trying that also. Who did you go through at your dealer, was it via the service team or the sales team?

Sales team, went back to the guy I bought it from and said sort it or I’ll most likely be returning it.

Nope, still an issue. FOD still isn’t active for the S3 so I just see no options in the app, it might be different for your A3 though as I’m sure others have said that they have some options being available. Frustrating as I’ve been told it would be available in September on numerous occasions and have had no updates/contact from York Audi unless I ring them.

Hey Byron,

It's picked up from the camera behind your rear view mirror and/or the sat nav database.

I slightly touch on it in the below video (although that's the driver assistance pack)

As far as I know, that square thing radar at bottom grill is enabled already, as on the MHEVs, it knows exactly when to restart the engine for additional braking from engine off coasting if a car is within 2 secs from car ahead. Also if you are on the highway and you go to the 'lane assist' menu on the virtual cockpit, it will caculate the distance between you and the car in front (I think the car icon is an Audi A6 or A8 though, def not A3) and it moves around closer or farther away from you depending on distance in between. Yes there's a triangular shaped looking lens high up the front windscreen which I think it's more for possibly speed limit sign reconition or something to that effect, maybe also part of pre-sense and the sensor that pings up the 'limited visibility' warning. Also at the back (well facing foward) of the rear view mirror, there's a square sensor which I think is the light sensor.

Nope, don't have it, I've got a Sport trim though. It's annoying, as my previous 2 Seat Leon/Ibiza had this (2014-2018), V40 didn't have it, but pings everytime a speed camera was imminent.

maybe also [..] the sensor that pings up the 'limited visibility' warning.
I’m pretty sure that the Limited Visibility message is received over the Car2X system (the message includes a radio transmitter symbol in the corner). There’s not much point in your own car detecting limited visibility as you can see for yourself. The intent of the limited visibility message is to warn you of limited visibility further up ahead. (Perhaps detected by another car with Car2X functionality?).

Any update on this? Judy took delivery of an 8y S3 and no speed limit in nav.

You can activate the Traffic Sign Recognition via functions on demand - you have to login into My Audi.com on the German website - if you search functions on demand in the forum it explains how to do it - you’ll have to pay though

Have you tried to do this or seen any info on it? When you go to pay it asks what country your from but can't see the UK anywhere unfortunately.

I have done it - 1 Euro 1 month trial - I went for Germany - used the first couple of lines from my address and for the postcode as someone suggested Google the British embassy in Berlin and use that zip code and it lets you through - if you use PayPal you then get an invoice but I paid by credit card and was emailed an invoice in German but you can translate

Once Purchased when you get in the car it downloads it automatically- I do get an error when I turn the ignition on but goes off straight away - I think it’s just the camera and MMI slow to boot but works perfectly ok

Do you know how much?

I asked the same question to the salesman about the speed limit warning, my old A3 saloon used to display the speed limit on the Nav screen, he said something about road sign camera package. Anyway fast forward a few days and I was driving along a A road and the speed limit reduced and I noticed on the virtual cockpit a speed limit warning telling me to slow down. Similar to when you approach a roundabout and it tells you to reduce speed.
My car is a S-line no optional extras only metallic paint.
I'm not sure if this speed limit warning is do to with your approach speed. I've had this warning pop up at certain times, but it seems only if I was approaching at (relatively) high speed - it didn't come up at the same place when I was approaching more slowly. It's in green, similar to the junction warning. I've since added traffic light recognition via Functions on Demand (logging on to German website) and this is a completely separate display.

It was 345 Euros permanently- I’ve done the 1 month trial for 1 Euro but will go permanently when the trial expires
Shouldn't Audi pay for this for us seeing as it's quoted as a feature in the hand book?

I’ve been trying but still waiting for a response
I’ve managed to get Audi to cover the costs but it was when I first bought the car, and it was based on the manual showing it should be enabled on the sat nav screen.

Yes same here just resurrected the original email trail but waiting confirmation they’ll cover the cost mainly because I’ll have to pay and claim it back

Handbooks have always had all the features in them as they have to cover all trim levels and options. They're not going to give you a handbook just to suit your spec!

Speed limit warning from sat nav (shown in green on dash) is completely separate from Traffic sign recognition.

This is true but it clearly states that you get speed limits on the Sat Nav (same as the 8V) if you don't have the camera based system which would apply to all specs although all A3's have a camera for Lane Assist and it's the same camera for TCR so in the 8Y nobody will get limits on the sat nav however basic.

We're not disputing the speed limit warning as we know it's different - The Sat Nav should show the speed limit for that road but they've taken it away - Please see above

Traffic Sign Recognition is now in my car via Functions on Demand (ordered on German My Audi though) - UK FOD still not open

I admit I've not noticed if its on the sat nav or not, I know what you mean as I had 8V too. The manual certainly shows it in the screen pics, of course its only on major roads. I've had speed limit warnings come up in green when approaching speed limits, and this can only be from the sat nav as I had it before I enabled traffic sign recognition, and anyway it comes well before any sign. Next time I go out I'll check out sat nav display.

Spot on. Imagine the combination of options and handbooks that would be required if each car had a bespoke handbook.

The manual specifically says if you do not have Traffic sign recognition then you will have the speed limit shown on the Nav, which at the very least is misleading.

If it was specific enough to say if you have the hardware for traffic sign recognition you will not have it on the nav then they could argue that’s accurate, but as things stand it isn’t.

Anyway York Audi said they’d enable it for me when it was available, as long as it was less than £300. I’ve finally managed to get the SOS fix applied to my car, and lo and behold I can now enter the FOD shop in the German language app and activate it, so it’s definitely linked to software version 3620 which I’m now on. So I’ve activated sign recognition as a trial. Will be getting in touch with York Audi tomorrow if they’re open and asking them to foot the bill for permanent activation.

Thanks to all of you who have helped get to this point, it’s been a pain in the **** getting to this point for something that should really be activated if it’s listed as a feature - that applies to both the speed limit AND Functions on demand!

Forums like this are a god send for things like this, so many people way more knowledgable than the dealership themselves

As FOD isn't officially available in the UK you might struggle to get them to pay for it, might not be the thing to do as an official dealer. And you've done well to get that sort of 'agreement' anyway, I'm surprised they don't just refer you to the paragraph that's always there, referring to their right to alter the spec at any time and correct at time of printing etc etc. Page 6.
