Good morning

So im in the market to buy what should be a forever car.
Ive just sold a mk4 golf r32 as I've been informed i need to grow up and think about the future.
Im in the market for an A6 avant. Been looking at the black edition models. Ideally the facelift but again not too bothered.
Im in a million different mindsets as i want a car that will be economical, but i want it to shift.
The main aim of this car is going to be towing my track car.

What i want help from is 2L or 3L is there a drastic difference between the two in regards to ecomomy and towing ability. I know it'll be more powerful but is it that great that its worth the mpg?

Is there anything i should also be looking for when viewing one, anything there prone to breaking?

Thanks in advance

Would definitely go for a facelift as this will give you a Euro6 compliant car, check if it is 3.0l as I think the very early facelift 3.0 cars were still Euro5. Easy check is to see if there is an AdBlue filler alongside the fuel filler nozzle. With increasing restrictions on diesel cars, such as London's ULEZ, you may find an earlier car increasingly expensive to use. The Facelift also gives you other things like power fold door mirrors and 4-zone climate. If you go for a car with the Tech Pack then it is set up for 4g/LTE connectivity rather than 3G.

I had 2 2.0 C7, the first ws a 170bhp and the second the 190bhp Ultra, Both are amply powerful in normal use, however if you are doing towing, and depending on what you plan to tow, the 3.0 probably makes more sense. You are also coming from an R32 so may miss the power from the 2.0. There is not a lot in it for fuel consumption (depending how you drive it of course :friendly wink:). With any car you look at, assuming it is an auto check the transmission fluid has been changed religiously at 38k miles (assuming it is DSG - higher powered 3.0s have the Tiptronic box which is supposedly sealed for life)

Hope this helps

Thanks very much. I sometimes just need to be told what I thought in my head haha.
Just try and find the right one now I guess

All depends on your budget.
I’ve had the 177 tdi pfl and the 190 then the 272 Quattro.
The 3.0 272 is a nice balance and economy wise wasnt far off the 190 but when you want it to shift it’s pretty quick. Quattro is great in any weather and coupled with winter tyres you can go anywhere.
Minimum spec I would say is sline with tech pack. Sline comes with memory seats, led lights, 4 zone climate and the avant has the electric boot lid. The 20in wheels on the black edition can feel a bit trashy on rough roads so keep that in mind.

Can only recommend V10's and V8's, but if one must grow then the V6's in 3.0L and above in most modern vehicles are acceptable.

As mentioned before, coming from an R32 (I've had this as well as the VR6 Dragon before) the 4/5 cylinder engines would feel dead.

Also, towing wise smaller engines need more fuel and suffer from the higher strain on many parts, the larger engines and surrounding parts are a lot more suitable overall.

Do you want the Allroad model with self-levelling air suspension?

I’d heard that about the wheels. Not cheap on tyres either and with it being 4wd should probably change all 4 at once.

I had 19s on mine and it was around £120-£150 for the Michelin ps3 at the time. 20s will be a bit more. Never changed a set as it was always a puncture. What I was told no more than 2mm difference across axle and 2mm between front and back as that could knacker the diffs. Not sure if there’s any truth in that as if you drive in towns with loads of roundabouts you are fecked.
I also had a set of winter wheels between the winter and summer set I did over 60ks, summers were about 2-3mm and winters had over 5mm when I sold them.
Tyre wear was even across all tyres as well.

How do you find it price wise for servicing and tyres?
Anything major gone wrong with yours?

Touch wood, nothing gone wrong in around 3 years of ownership. Just tyres and standard servicing costs. Keep her in tip top shape and you’ve little to concern yourself with.

Depending on what you end up with, and age/mileage you can add an Audi warranty for complete piece of mind.

Keep the mk4 R32 lol my mate regrets selling his.

I came from an 2002 S3 to the A6 BiTDI as we needed a family car and so my car had to go.

The bitdi offers good performance and reasonable economy (early 30 mpg and 40+ on a long run)

Its a totally different drive to the Mark 4 chassis but is effortless on long runs, you can still have fun in the a6 but in a different way.

Don`t go for anything less or you will be disappointed imo. S6 is just too thirsty for me but could be tempted in the future.

oh and I`m on 20 inch and run Uniroyal rain sports get about 20k to a set front wear is slightly more than rear but its close enough to change them all at once.
