I took delivery of my Audi A3 Sportback 2 weeks ago which came with the Bang and Olufson, and I have to say I am extremely disappointed with it. I can't work out if the suboofer in the back is blown or if it's rattling the internals of the car. It sounds like the sub is farting on low frequencies. Coming from an M140 which had the Harmon Kardon, I expected the Bang and Olufson to at least be on par, but the HK blows it away.
I don't want to take the car to the dealership for them to take the car to bit to tell me it's normal, so wondered if anyone else was experiencing the same issues?

Mine didn’t sound amazing when I first received it, had to tinker with the settings but never heard anything sounding like it was farting on low volumes. Sounds like you’ve got a faulty sub Potentially.

I have come from a Saab with Bose and thing the B&O is a huge upgrade. Sounds good to me and definitely no farting noises.

If you're unsure or unhappy with it, just take it in would be the best option, they'll be able to advise you best.

So I’ve had the car in at the dealership and initially the mechanic didn’t notice it. I let another mechanic have a listen and he heard it straight away. Car is booked in for longer to give the guys a chance to fix investigate the issue and hopefully fix it.

ps. It’s more noticeable with the volume at low volume and with the ignition turned off.

Did you get a fix for this? B&O sounds really pants in the first few hours and left with settings at stock. It becomes better and bass more powerful after few hours playing music

Hey, I didn’t get a fix but the sound has improved drastically! The bass is a lot deeper and the clarity is way better. I’m very happy with it although there is a slight issue with the sub which has been recognised as a fault so is due to be looked at by Audi soon. The only thing that is really letting the sound system down is the build quality of the door cards. They rattle like crazy on certain songs which is a shame

Hi @figolovechild,
Did you get a fix from Audi's side? I picked up my A3 45 TFSIe last Thursday and I'm having same issue as you. I'll bring the car to my dealer tomorrow and see what they come back with...

The guys on EvilGT (u tube) said that the interior was a big let down on the 8Y over the 8V

They also said that the door cards were rattling on their RS3 and B and O and the whole interior when you look carefully at it was obviously a cost cutting exercise over the 8V

I have a loaded 8V black edition and keep looking at the 8Y Edition 1 or a 2020 A5 Black edition

Build quality in the A3 is putting me off and the A5 is like £500 a year to tax. Hate car shopping. Thing is I cannot fault my 8V and will no doubt keep it a big longer but will eventually have to change it for something else.

If you take a look at some of the earlier threads in the 8Y forum, you will find lots of views about the interior quality of the 8Y compared to the 8V. I think that it is fair to say that those who loved the 8V, did not feel the same way about the new version. The thing is, a fair comparison isn't between the 8Y and the 8V: it is between the 8Y and the current crop of comparable cars from other companies, with which it compares more favourably (as they all seem to be moving to lighter materials on the insides, for reasons of cost and / or weight and /or the environmental). Generally, the new A3 seems to fare pretty well in reviews.

On the B&O system, I have only found door rattle (as annoying as it is) to be a rare problem - I guess it depends on the type of music that you listen to and how loud you play it.

So the mechanic at the dealership explained that there are vents next to the sub which let air escape when closing doors. These are apparently rattling with the force of air from the sub. This rattle/fart noise happens even at the lowest volume, so I'm not sure if this is the issue or not, but it sounds like a blown sub to me. I'll have them check it on the next service. I may chance it and ask for a replacement sub. It's made this noise from day one so at least I know it's not something I have done to damage it.

I own a 2022 Audi RS3 8Y Sedan/Saloon I’m facing an issue with a B&O Sound System where the (Front Lower Door Speakers) don’t actually play the music all you can hear is base

is that normal for the car

I think this is pretty normal. The speakers in the car are a mix of bass (woofers), mid range and tweeter speakers which each handle different frequency ranges. The bigger bass door speakers will handle the lower frequencies and the higher frequencies (including vocals) will predominantly be dealt with by the mid range and tweeter speakers. I suppose if you listen to a lot of Barry White, and you listen carefully, you might hear some vocals from the bass speaker too

Someone posted the exact same thing on a different thread, that mostly no vocals from door speakers, didn't believe, put my ear on it, yes, mainly lower frequencies and some mumble jumbo, but it's def working, as it vibrates when music is on. Guess on a 'good' setup, the 4 x mid-range plus 2 tweeters on the dash / A pillar would do the vocals, and the door ones fill it everything lower frequency. It's no different to proper home hifi speakers when you discconnect the tweeter, and listen to the woofer, there are hardly any vocals from there. Had a courtesy A5 car for almost a week, that just had the 'stock' 8 speaker setup, so door speakers needed to do some vocals. I couldn't wait to get back (stereo wise) to the A3 with B&O. Coming from A3 B&O, the A5 music sounded poor. Even my other half commented, this (A5) sound system is S*** within 10 secs (I transfered my USB stick for music, so same tracks), and she ain't no audiophile. It doesn't matter how much I tweaked the sound on the A5.

Might check today if the rear door speakers have any vocals, I suspect it does!

They probably do. There's no mid range speakers in the rear, just bass and treble, so I would suspect that they receive a wider frequency range from the amp than the fronts.

I thought I had it sussed but I’m pretty disappointed with it. The bass and subwoofer setting seems to be the same thing so I don’t know why there’s an option to adjust both? I’m interested to know if anyone has noticed that the bass and sub controls control the same frequency? All of the door cards rattle like crazy when the volume is turned up half way. It’s just an awful experience after paying extra for what’s meant to be a premium sound. I think it’s actually damaging to the B&O brand. I will never buy B&O again for my car or house. Its actually put me off buying another Audi. This will be the last.

I also found the door cards rattle when the volume is high-ish. I've now set bass to 0 and the sub to +5 so more of the bass is handled by the sub instead of the door speakers which does improve the ratlting.

I find that the the sub setting actually adjusts the speakers in doors? It’s as if the setting for the sub and bass do the same thing.

Are people who are finding B&O a poor sound system generally coming from other make's 'premium' sound system? I find B&O a very good system (esp on high bitrate mp3 via usb drive, DAB is decent too, but FM is not good, I don't play via BT), but could do with a more powerful sub though. However when I go sit in a Harman Kardon equipt BMW, I know that's a slighly better system, and as I mentioned when I had the A5 with stock 8 speaker, that was noticeably poorer. Can't imaging how the 6 speaker A3 would sound.... my settings is treble +3, bass + 2, sub + 4 (I think). Focused on all (can't decide whether Front sounds better on not), and mid-surround.

I went to the car today and yes the rear doors speaker have vocals, tweeters work. Even managed to press my ear on the c pillar speakers and some sound does emit from those, not sure what though. And also the sub settings seem to affect the front door bass speaker and maybe sub. I put my hand on the front door speakers and seems to vibrate more when sub level increase not so much bass level setting. Maybe bass setting is only meant for the dash midranges and rear door speakers? One some bass heavy tracks the sub in boot does make a weird sound as one say fart, but other bass heavy songs it doesn't. But I can't hear this fart in the front seat nor rear seats only if boot is open. Maybe a closed boot stops this. Weird

Yeah, I can hear the farting/vibrating sound with the boot closed. I’ve just accepted that the whole system is cheap crap and coupled with a poorly built interior. The interior would only vibrate/rattle no matter what sound system was installed, so I won’t be buying Audi again.
