To help pass the time for the 8y to arrive, a bit of fun

The rs3 is basically £60k so if you weren’t to get the rs3 what would you get?

Has to be new factory order cars…

A lot of people say £60k for an a3 is crazy and I agree I’m so far as you could say similar about £40k for a golf… but what else is out there that delivers what the rs3 does for similar money?

On first look I am thinking there’s not much alternative unless you throw used cars into the mix?

That's a really good question and the answer is - I don't know!

I was actually looking a 3 series estate in the M340i X-drive trim but it doesn't look like you can even order them right now so that rules that out. I'm not a Merc fan so I guess it would be something like an S4 (although it's a diesel now...) or maybe a Cayman 718 GTS (£65k) with no options? Don't really know!

That all sounds really similar to the options I was thinking, with the m340 touring being the only close contender as it would also double for doggo duties.

Gts4.0 was something I specd up as a real contender but the cost soon escalated when you take the “in for a penny in for a pound” approach - ie if you’re getting a factory order, you’ve got to do it properly!!

Given current climate I think for discussion purposes delivery lead times can be put to one side for this - especially given the rs3 (vorsprung) is probably one of the longest lead times out there!!

Sounds like we're pretty much in the same position then! Haha.

I didn't want the RS3 until September 2022 anyway so that I could make sure I had a decent deposit ready, and now it's looking like it might be then whether that was the original plan or not! Lol. If it gets to June/July next year and it still doesn't look like cars are coming out then I might start to get a little more annoyed but for now I'm happy with the wait.

Also looked at M340 touring for doggy duties, lovely inside but when you look at side view the previous model is a lot prettier.

Porsche? F**k those shower of tw*ts, I registered interest in a new Cayman GT4, I was number 2 on their list, I got the call to say the order books were open and I needed to put £10k down, I duly trundled to Porsche Chester, specced the car, I was just about to hand over my credit card when I casually asked 'i'm still number 2 on the waiting list?'

Mmmm, er, um no Sir, some regular (obviosly more important than me) customers and we all always look after those first Sir have jumped you, you are number 11 on our list and you might not even get a car and IF you do it will be end of next year (18 months)

My good nature got the better of me and I told him in no uncertain terms to shove his, and the dealers attitude, plus the car up his fat **** :)

The previous gen is a looker but they are pushing silly money at the moment and used so not an option in this make believe thread

I wouldn’t call the current gen car ugly so I could “make do” with one for sure lol. I was weighing up petrol vs diesel but for noise and it not actually being too bad on fuel, I would go petrol and may yet do so later next year when I replace the mrs car (vs golf R estate).

Had similar experience with my local Porsche although not quite so bad as yours - they were more up front that if you didn’t have a history with Porsche you’re going to struggle to get a gt4. It was a “not impossible” but close enough to being so it wouldn’t be worth holding out for one. I was ushered towards the gts4.0 to help me get in the door for a gt4.

Truth be told I was more tempted by the macan gts as an interim car… I moan about suvs and saving the estate car so could t bring myself to do it though!!

Yeah I think so! I wasn’t expecting the rs3 to be ready for me until we’ll into next year but managed to secure a LE so that came forward and I thought I had to go for it!!

I did also have a carbon black saloon in grey with c&s pack as a backup but hopefully won’t need it as I’ve cancelled that order now so would be well down the pecking order if that goes tits up.

if the Le falls through for any reason I think I would hold out for the facelift rs3 (and the hope I could spec exactly what I want - ie they change the configurator) or wait for the m3 estate… although that’s more money again so doesn’t really work in my own game in this thread!!!!

A relative has had a fair number of Porsches (Lots of new Cayman and 911 Turbo's) even had an un-registered GT3RS locked away in his garage, he placed an order at two Porsche centres for a GT2RS and never received one, I suspect the un registered GT3RS may have had something to do with it as Porsche do like the cars to be seen

I Just dont think the rear is a patch on Audi RS4, but the 340i and D would give the RS4 a run for its money away from the lights and the D probably x2 on mpg, Joe Achillies has a couple of videos of both i and D :)

Oh yeah vs the rs4 for sure it’s not got a chance but it is an m lite so to be expected. True test will be when the M comes out…

There's nothing around that 60k mark for me, I'd have to kill my self to come up with the extra 20 odd grand for a M3 competition.

Odd that no one has mentioned an A45S/A45S Plus, it's not for me though

Nor me.

Perhaps I am over simplifying it but I just see it as yet another 4 banger hot hatch… yes it’s powerful but it’s not special in my eyes.

I would sooner have a golf R and be a bit slower, if it had to be a 4 pot, rather than go for the merc…

Been there done that - its a great all round car and very rapid, great handling, top tech. good materials etc but just has no soul.
I thought I could handle a 4 pot but the sound really lets an otherwise superb car down.

I am still running my B9 S4 (petrol) and loving it.

I had to stay with Audi due to wanting to keep running the S4 and extending the lease.

On order I have an RSQ3, just feels (to me) like more car than the non-Q. Will it drive as well, well no but I think it will make me smile.

I have to be honest, nothing else floats my boat, I'd said this was the last brand new petrol car I buy and the RS3 was the one I wanted to go out on (and keep). Bored to tears of 4 pot turbo's and as nice as the outgoing m2 was, I've never been a BMW fan, plus the new one looks a bit off IMO (if the m240i is anything to go by).

I'd love another 370z Nismo but as v6's go it was a bit underwhelming in the acoustics department and the tech is very outdated.

That does look pretty nice. Good shout

Had an m2 comp a while back but the interior let it down - that’s clearly been brought up to date and looks all the better for it. Could be tempted by the new m2 when that comes out…

kinda wishing I’d got an M2 now instead of the 45s. A VERY capable car on track and sounded ****ing brilliant. Just the interior as you say / the new car will sort that by the looks of it.

I never had it on track but the front end was so direct it was great on back roads. Then you had the rear to come into play to rotate the car too which I found was so engaging as you learnt the car.

The surefootedness of awd is best for the road imho but rwd is a craft to master and rewarding if you take the time - i can imagine it would be epic on track

If it was out next summer I recon people would have considered making that jump actually… but I believe it’s early 2023 before it’s on the roads and damm, I hope Audi have sorted themselves out by then!!!

if it wasn't for the 4 doors I'd be going for a ttrs or M2 comp,
If I could get away with a 2 door coupe but can't

Nothing confirmed yet, but would have thought you are right on the 2023, maybe late 2022 for the M2.

I got a quote for a TTRS Vorsprung after discount its only a £1000 more expensive than the RS3 Vorsprung...but the TTRS Vorsprung has a GFMV of £2k less than the RS3 Vorsprung making it £3k more expensive than the RS3
The price gap between the TTS vorsprung and the TTRS Vorsprung even after discount is £13k the TTRS Vorsprung is way way overpriced as the TTS is a better car to drive and a better daily drive but in some parts of the interior it does justify some of that extra dosh Audi charges over the A3 models

Yeah that’s just my guess tbh. I wonder if it will be order books open late 2022…? We shall see.

Will likely be similar money to the rs3 so a good shout from jassy as a suggestion

i think the new M2 is going to be 4 wheel drive too, or offered as an option

If the uk car sounds like this omg !

Check out @ 3.10
But then omg @ 3.25

Has that been confirmed yet do you know?

I had heard they weren’t going to offer 4wd for the m2 but that would surprise me as it may struggle to be faster than the m240 xdrive but it needs to be too dog and warrant the m tax… maybe that it’s rwd would be its key selling point vs all it’s competitors?!

Either way I’m looking forward to seeing more as details are released.

Would be good if so, but I suspect that’s without opf filter?

The bmw straight six always seems to sound better in person than on video imho… even the f80 m3 lawnmower sounds better in person (so long as someone hasn’t put a pop/crackle map on it to ruin it entirely).

I was under the impression the 2022 model was going to be all electric

Yeah, bmw are leaning towards the big grin front end look, especially with the LCI X3 side X4 M's. Looks kinda dopey to me.

I liked the m3 in person a lot more than I thought I would…

Don’t like this colour or the stupid exhausts but it sounded better than I had expected too.
