S3 lowered on H&R springs

I was asked via PM by Jamiekip for some info and pic's , but as we have quite a few new S3 owners , i thought i'll turn it into a thread instead.

I have 25mil H&R lowering springs and 10mil H&R spacers all round

First things last , the Std car is firm , it's a sporty car , if comfort was our main priority we would of bought a different car.

The ride IS firmer than Std.....i'd have a guess at 10% firmer ( so long since i drove a Std car) Large pot holes are a menace , but there a menace in the Std car too, speed bumps are fine hight wise , and if your like me you drive over them at about 10mph anyway no problem comfort wise.
There maybe a bit more road noise ( i thought the Std car was quite nosiy ) coming from the tyres , but it also could that i'm running two different sets of tyres and i like my PSI set to max/more than recommended.

Handling has improved buckets , turn in is a lot sharper , less bodyroll, the car seems more planted full stop.
Ive read about people saying ( i noticed it myself ) the car is twitchy over humps/bumps at speed on the M/Way , now it justs plants with no wobble as soon as it lands, it's solid! :)

Just like mine mate!

It transforms the handling and like you say the twitchy bumpy feeling when pressing on goes away.

Dont know whether to sell the H + R springs on mine when I get th new one in Sep or just transfer them onto the new car, they have done about 8-10k.

Poss worth buying some new to go on a new car considering they are not that much?

How do you find the ride comfort?

TBH Jam unless you can take the old ones off yourself it'll cost you the same as what you would sell them for, so i would just trade the car in with them on, and buy a new set ready for when you pick the car up!

I'd take off and keep the spacers though!

It will probs only cost about £20 to change them over mate as have a friend who is a ex Audi mechanic who lowered it in the first place as he has set his own business up so would be cost effective to take them over to the new car unless having 8-10k miles on them would be worth getting new ones?

The spacers are coming off along with the RNS-E sat nav and bluetooth, and the flat bottom steering wheel (that should sell to someone!) as that is standard now.
 
Like you say the ride is quite hard and bumpy (Mrs moans quite a bit when driving fast along country roads!) but I quite like it this way, reminds me of my karting days!
 
Maybe keep your old springs then mate , they wont take as long to settle down!

Yep it is firm , but the looks , stance , handling make up for it IMHO

No pain no gain!

Suppose 10k miles is not that much for them?

Just wondering if I should start new with a new car?

They don't settle 100% till around 2k , so theres 10's000's of miles left in them.

I can understand you wanting new springs though, it's up to you!

Looks very nice, firm I don't mind what aI dislike about the Sline is that its very bouncy, do you get that with the S3 ?

It's certainly not bouncy now! You only used to get bouncy over humps and bumps at speed.

anyone just gone with the spacers? What does that look like on the std s3 suspension?.
I love the look of it but to be honest I am not sure I could live with the ride being harder?..
Guess magnetic ride is the way to go on facelift s3?!...
 
Love the stance with the HR's on, to me it is a perfect height, just wish i could find some springs for my 2WD S-line that would lower it to that height!

I did before I lowered it, looks good certainly better than standard. Would be a good trade off if you dont want harder suspension!

My spacers should be here this week (I hope :( ) I'll post a pic for you then. In the meatime S3 LTN has them on with standard suss, maybe he can post a pic for you.

Doesnt look as low obviously, but it beefs out the car a little :p

Also people driving behind will see a lot more of your spokes on the front wheel. I was driving a lot behind S3 LTN and it looks really nice.

I'm not sure on that , there were three of us at a meet a few weeks back all parked next to each other and all Phantom!

Std , spaced , and me lowered and spaced , the spaced car pushed the wheels out a bit , but it also seemed to excentuate the slightly high ride hight IMHO.

LoL no way. Pushing out the wheels does not push up the arches :scared2:

It fills them out nicely :) I wouldnt say the std height is high anyway when comparing with other similar cars.

I also dissagree that the std suss is bouncy, I really dissagree with that. *hiccupp*

If you come to the RR day 911, you can take a look ( if they arrive :( )
 
The standard suspension was def bouncy on mine!

When pushing on over a crest on a country road it felt a bit unstable at the back to me, the springs improved it no end.

I'm sure some of the motoring press picked up on this fact too.

Hmmm, maybe mine is still bedding in then? The suss is really stiff over here. When going over speed humps theres no wallow at all.

I suppose its all relative; you guys are comparing to stiffened and lowered suss, and im comparing to my Girlf's 10years old Golf TDi. :laugh:
 
There wont be over speed bumps at low speed but just have a blast along some country roads with crests and you should see what i'm talking about!
 
Mine has the spacers but not lowered - until I can find a set that dont drop the rear as much as Leons (phantom's) which is just a bit too low at the rear for my taste

Looks very nice! I'll put them on my S3 which will come in my garage in a couple of days! I have on A4 DTM H&R and all I can say is that car looks superb and handling is improved veeeeery much
 
Give Damian (DPM) on here a shout as he can do a good deal, or try the TT shop.
 
Either 10 all around or 8 on front and 10 on the rear if you want the rear to look a bit pushed out further than the front. Go for H + R hubcentric ones then you will get no steering wheel vibration at high speeds!
 
Cant do 12 if you plan to lower the car as they will rub!

Went over quite a bump fast the other week with one person in the back and my 10's nipped the arches!

Ive never heard of fitting spacers before.

Is it a 4wd thing ?
How does the car drive afterwards? is it a purely a cosmetic mod?
How are the drive shafts/suspension components affected?
Why doesnt the car have a wider track from the factory when AUDI have spent ££££s on chassis development?

This is a new mod for me so Im interested to know more.

No, not a 4wd thing.

Doubt a few mm difference can be felt on a road car, some cars with big brake kits may use spacers to get a little more clearance.

People say wheel bearing life is reduced due to the added moment. IMHO (just imho), even 1 cm of added leverage is nothing compared to a slow turn or a pothole.

Same reason why audi doesnt give us thicker anti roll bars or remapped engines. The suspension components (hubs, arms...) need to be catered/compromised for different versions of the same car. As you might have guessed, the brakes and wheel geometry are quite different between a 2.0t or a 140 diesel A3?

I'll post a pic up once theyre on. If they rub, it'll only be for a short while, till the wheels have made a home for themselves under the arches :)
 
Hmmm, I have 10mm all round and get the occassional rub on the back arches as it is, especially when I ahve a passenger in the back.
Good luck with the 15's - I think lot's of people have had to change a specific screw holding the arch liner in place.
