Have you owned an Open Top Car?

As above, have you owned a Cabriolet/Open Top Sportscar of some sort or do you currently have one already?
If No to the above, do you plan to own one in the future? I see it as a must for any Petrolhead at some point of their Car ownership.

I have the roof down at every opportunity, and love posing in it...but the fact they dont handle so well is annoying, especially having spend 4 years ragging a fiat coupe...

I've not owned one, bit too impractical for my current lifestyle, but I would certainly like one at some time! I hired one for 2 weeks in California and it was brilliant!

I used to have an Audi 80 cab as my last car and i would have one again although it would be one of the last of the production of the old 80 cabs next time round, I really liked that car.

Still got my Mk1 Golf GTI cabby, has sat in the garage for 2 1/2 years gathering dust though.

Blinding little cars.

Old school cabbys are cool as a second car, bit pointless having one as a main car though as you can't have the roof down for 95% of the time.

Had a couple of rag top jeeps over the years too, proper off roaders, so i could leave the roof off and let them get rained on and not give a ****. That's the best type of drop top.

I always thought rag tops were a bit naff, really just for posers and the like, then early one morning got a lift home in a friends mk2 Golf Cab. We drove through Leicester with the top down at 5am, guess now I can appreciate why people like them, I agree with what Smitch said about it being a second car, wouldnt like one in the middle of winter though BRRRRRRR....

If your a petrol head then a open top is the last choise as they are heavier and not as ridgid. As we live in the uk then ill stick with a hard top

I wonder what Porsche Boxster owners will have to say about that, sure the Cayman being a Hardtop is the better car, but it costs a lot more!

thats was mine until I sold it, we want to get a convertible as a second car, I wouldn't even mind having one as a main car. Some of the comments about handling are true but then when you compare it to something like a a3/a4, mondeo passat then they ain't much worse. We had a 207cc when we went up to scotland and it was great, comfortable and much better equipped than the A3, the point with them is that you don't have to go flat out everyehere to enjoy driving. Oh and I would have the roof down anytime it wasn't raining.

That Speedster looks great too, love them but the replicas are sooooo expensive.

Here's my old Golf Cabriolet, had to sell it once junior arrived, not as practical as a Passat Estate of course, but it did manage to take 4 adults including their luggage for a week away, so not too bad in my opinion. I did tinker about getting a Honda S2000 as a replacement for the S3, but the model I want falls into the higher road tax band, so no joy.

The only think that spoils that for me is the mk4 front end and mk3 back end.
And with that big anti rollbar with the roof down, as most older convertables have just ruins the point of having one. Seeing that bar just reminds me too much of the mk5 escort or mk3 astra converts

I also considered a s2000 before the S3, but that would ahve been with the hard roof option. Didn`t pick it for the soft top just fancied another honda and that was the best small sports they did at the time.


I can see why golf convertables get the knickname of being a pram now lol

I bought my first Cabriolet a couple of months ago. I was having to replace my old car anyway and I thought I have got to have one at some point so why the hell not. Must say I know we haven't had the greatest of summers!! but really pleased with it and there's nothing like open top driving . I would certainly buy another in the future as well.

Thanks, they are not really a family car but alot more piratical that alot of people think.

Not everyones choice, I used to think they were a little kit car ish but tbh the build quality is dam good if you can find a good one.

My first 'sporty' car was an XR3i convertable very similar to this one, but in white. It had the same alloys, but the suspension had been lowered by the previous owner. I loved it and it handled like a go-kart.

Wouldn't have another though; no hair = sunburned head!

i'm on my second cabriolet, first was a Mk1 Golf Clipper, great little car with the full big bumper kit.

Now onto the A3 cabriolet, reminds me so much of the Golf, same style roof, boot space

I can get 30mpg on the motorway in the Tuscan (light car with good ratios = reasonable mpg)

If the weather continues as it is I may need to change my choice! A vert in the rain is no fun

Never owned one but rented several convertibles when on holiday in the US (always the Chrysler Sebring) and it's easy to see the appeal - they are great fun. Maybe for my next car!

bought my a4 cab a couple of months back. l've loved the shape for a very long time and took 8 months to find a good one. i love it. driving with the roof down is a totally different driving experience. the handling hasnt really affected me, as i went from a '96 escort, and the A4 is miles better. didnt buy it to pose in, but had a few positive comments thrown my way when driving round town. which is nice.

i had a RS turbo`ed escort cabby same shape as 1 above. i loved it until it rained and i wanted the window open just a tad (to have a fag etc) water always dripped in as there ar no gullys on the roof and he water drips down the edge of the roof!!

would not mind a Audi convertable tho a4 or summink!!!

Modern convertibles are much better than of old, no more wind noise than a tintop and just as warm in winter too. It is suprising how often you can get the roof down too (sold ours last year though).
