    I thought this was normal, every diesel car I have driven has done this. I have the 1.6L TDI and it does this, I also used to drive a 2L BMW and that did the same. I only noticed it since I've drove a petrol car for the past 2 years.

    If your wife is only going to be driving short distances like door to door then I would suggest the petrol version. This is because a build up of carbon will occur with the diesel. My A1 is diesel and the first day I picked it up, it went into limp mode! Turns out the EGR valve needed replacing...
