Make sure the PCV system is working properly before you replace the gasket. I didn’t and had to replace it twice! Also get a cheap eBay cable and the free version of VCDS. Then you can scan for codes.

I had the same problem. I had only raised one wheel on an axle stand. When I raised both rear wheels and REALLY pryed on the hub it moved down far enough to wiggle the spring/shock out.

Thanks for the response. I think I used the guy you suggested. They’re called WPS. Great service and did exactly as you described.
It was a painful job but made easier by removing the heat shield to get to the famous 3rd bolt. Managed it in the end.
Now running fine again.
