Thanks for your help Desertstorm - I nipped to Halfrauds earlier, got some speaker wire and junction boxes and spliced it in from the HU. Rears are working great. No working sub, but I'm nearly 40 and have no need for bass in my life now haha
Whatever is simplest really, I was hoping that popping the sub box in would be a plug and play solution, but it seems not. Ideally get the rears working as a minimum. Maybe I'll chin off that sub box and go with your method...

So, the original sub had been taken out, and replaced with ... nothing. From what I can gather this sub box has a built in amp that powers the rear speakers - is this correct? Also there is a plug...

Yeah bargain! Glad it was cheap too. Plus I liked the way Audi designed the door with an unboltable sub frame, made the job a lot easier than when it happened on my Mk 3 Golf!
