The Ghost is ok if you are not in the vicinity of the vehicle when it's being targeted. If it's on your drive and your new car won't start when they've just got your keys etc from your kitchen it will take them about 10 seconds to suspect the reason.

My iPhone 6+ checks for emails every 30mins. If I didn't use the phone at all, after a week it would only be around 70% discharged. So, it would need around 1.4amperehours to top itself up.
In those circumstances there would be an increase in consumption. But, I couldn't conceive of anyone doing what you suggest. I could understand a second phone being left in a car on charge so it's never forgotten when you go out.
