Hi all. I have a standard 2011 A3 TDI wagon, with basic monochrome MMI unit. I bought the above backup camera + rearview mirror combo (AUTO-VOX T1400). It's a nice bit of kit, I've got it installed and working great, using the provided cigarette adapter to power the rearview mirror screen. This adapter gives me a long annoying wire to deal with, and I have to keep unplugging the adapter when not using the car, to avoid draining the battery.

Ideally I'd like to wire it straight into a 12V ACC (switched) line up near the mirror itself, to clean things up and only give it power when the car is on. So far I have disassembled the car's main dome light panel and found some wiring harnesses for the lights and moon roof control and motor, but according to my multimeter all power sources are showing as always live, even if the key is completely switched off.

Can anyone advise on how to get access to a 12V switched power line up there? If necessary I can run a line down to the fuse box and use an adapter to get a lead there, but ideally I could keep the wiring up top.

Apologies in advance if I got any electrical/wiring terminology wrong. And thanks in advance for the help!

You can tuck the wiring into the roof lining and run it along into the corner and then down inside the A pillar and straight into the fuse box. Then you can use a piggyback fuse and come off a switched live. It’s the way most of us here have done it.

Yep that’s the best way, I used the fuse for my blowers to piggyback for my dash cam

Check this similar post.
He ended up rooting the cable to the fuse box.
