Thankfully this hasn't happened to me and hope it never does. Reason for the question is I have been watching Police Interceptors and all the motorway pull-overs have a hard shoulder. We have all heard the horror stories of breakdowns on smart motorways, so what would you do?

Follow the patrol car as instructed to the next slip where you would get your ticket?

I think it’s best to pull up next slip/service station especially at night.
Remember years ago a cop came to my workplace to do safety stuff and they said at night keep driving till you get somewhere public as there’s been instances of fake cops car jacking folk. This was mainly aimed at the lassies working late. A real cop wouldn’t be bothered if you decided to keep going for a few miles till you reached somewhere safe.

Acknowledge that you have seen them and proceed at a safe speed to the next safe area to stop.

Normally they are behind you with the lights on. If they are in front that normally means you are in deep sh1t
