CVT oil change?

Hi,

New to the forum, just picked up an A4 190 S line with the CVT box, just wondering if anyone can tell me how often the gear box oil needs replacing? It was done 20k ago, just wondered if it's worth doing it every 20k, which is about 4 years for me.

Also is it common for these not to have rear electric windows? Mine doesn't, must be a povey spec S line lol.

The ATF needs changing every 40k but more often isnt a bad idea although its about £150 at Audi.It is strange that rear ew are an extra.Some try and retrofit but not easy and I dont think I would bother
 
thanks for the quick reply, I won't bother with the rear windows, just annoying when the kids undo them then don't do them all the way back up lol. On my last car the only time the rear windows went down was when I did it accidentally trying to undo the fronts.

Just waiting for a price to change to auto transmission fluid from my local specialist, it had a brand new box and box ECU a couple of years ago, so I'm hoping (touch wood) not to have any issues with it, it's incredibly smooth.
 
Might be worth you googling the well known sludge issues of the vag 1.8t engines to establish if you could have some problems in the future.
 
Thanks mate, I've come from a 1.8T Octavia VRS so know a few of the common 1.8t faults. The audi had a new oil pump and pick up done 20k ago, my plan is to do an oil service around every 5k miles, would this prevent any further issues?

I've changed my oil myself the other day but it was to late for my CVT. It is being rebuilt from scratch now. Change isn't so bad although make sure you get the correct oil. Audi made mistakes in the past selling the wrong oil. I believe the yellow instead of the usual red oil is the answer. Look into my build thread for part numbers.
 
Ive decided not to get the CVT oil changed this year, it was only going to cost around £150 to do, they said it uses 7l of oil? Mine was replaced 20k ago, my car had a brand new audi box fitted 30k ago, along with a brand new gearbox ECU fitted 20k ago.

So far I am loving the CVT, it's so smooth and effortless, just hoping it stays that way (touch wood).

What was wrong with the box in yours mate? I've seen an online company offereing to repair the CVT ECU for £185 with a lifetime warranty. The guy I bought my car from just took the car straight to audi if he ever had any issues, which is good for me :)
 
7L of oil is a lie! It needs 4.5L for replacement. You only need 7.7 litres for full replacement when you take the gearbox apart completely. ECU is fine. The pump got stuck the pump exploded which led to damage of pulleys, chain and shaft. My gearbox oil never has been changed. Learnt the hard way. But now I get the new parts, upgrade of the firmware to the latest one and upgrade of clutches from 6 plates to 7. I will change the oil every 10k after the car gets back on the road.
 
ok thanks, I trust the garage so guess they just saw the bigger volume and though it was that one. What were the symptoms of your failure? Do you think it was caused by the lack of oil change? My gearbox was changed in late 2009, I assume this means it has the 7 clutch design?

I thought you needed a special tool to carry out the oil change? Out of interest whats the cost of your gearbox rebuild?

No need for special tools. Well you need to have a tool to undo the oil caps at the bottom of the box. You can see it in my build thread. If it was changed by Audi then perhaps you have to better box its also dependable on the engine size and code and also the gearbox.

The box started do jerk and judder sometimes on start. Basically what it is - the oil pressure is not enough to grab the chain correctly and the chain slides on the pulleys which cases scratches in the pulleys which will result in gearbox making noise at different speeds. End of story the pump seized box tried to turn it over the pump exploded and lost all drive. Cause for all that is that the filters get clogged up and the oil flow stops. If i would fix it straight away when it started doing it would be £550 and same day pick up but because I was driving it about it wrecked the rest of the box.

If the pulleys and chain can be reconditioned it is £750. If the parts need to be changed it is £1000.

I could've just changed the pump and the car is ready to drive although because the rest of parts are degraded I decided to go for full rebuild.

So for mine £1000 is the full rebuilt cost. Including labour and parts.
 
Yes he only works with Audi CVT nothing else. People from all over Europe drop the cars to him. Drop the car off in the morning and pick it up in the evening. Great!

Hi mate, I stumbled upon your post, currently having problems with my Audi A4 S-line with multitronic CVT gear box, do you still have the contact details for the guy who re builds CVT gear boxes ?
