Facelift LED vs Matrix lights

Maybe you are getting mixed up with Matrix Laser headlights which is what Audi have been running on their 24 hour cars and will makes it onto road cars within the next year or two. I think the OLED lights are only for the rear clusters

Laser Matrix

I think I saw something about laser headlights being an option on the R8 for £8000

Main beams laser lights are a £3125 option on all R8's

I've got to find the tech doc that was sent to me on them. My storage drive for Audi stuff needs a good clean up but it's 2 TB of files :(
Proper level of Audi geekery...

Would be good if you dig it out, I'd be interested to see how they can get sufficient light output from OLED for use in a headlight. It represents an enourmous leap in development of OLED technology if they can. If such a thing is coming then the new A8 would be the logical first recipient for it. Spy shots don't seem to show any of the size benefits of OLED in use in the headlights though, and if it's to be closely based on the Prologue, then that might indicate laser is still Ingolstadts current favoured high end tech for headlights. It'll be interesting to how the new A8 shapes up...

Had bi xenon on my Golf R

They were passable

Have standard LED on my S3 (included as part of the performance pack).

They have a better pattern, less holes, cleaner light and better reach.

Audis upcoming OLEDs are promising. Far better suited than LED in matrix
I've got LED lights on mine and find them better than the xenons (had a loaner A3 for a couple of days). The light output is definitely better with the LEDs.

I also find them less tiring on my eyes during long stints in the dark.

As said, Standard and Matrix cars have the same rear light clusters, all the differences are up front.

To look at, the standard front lights and the Matrix front lights are very similar. The matrix gets the dynamic front indicators though. The key difference is seen whe you're driving.

I hate driving at night because with the lights of other cars coming towards me I sometimes struggle to see ahead, and I just can't pick out any detail in unlit areas because of the high contrast between extreme brightness and extreme dark. If like me you live by the usually very sensible mantra "only go as fast as you can see", I am often reduced to a 30mph crawl on NSL roads because I refuse to simply plough on without knowing what I'm ploughing into. With Matrix lights, dark country lanes are lit as well as ordinary lights are on high beam, right up to the moment another car or a reflective road sign comes into view. At that point when ordinary lights drop 80% of the view ahead into near darkness, the selective high beams in the matrix units (there's 25ish in each headlight) come into play and light up everything but the other car or the reflective sign. This magical effect reduces the high contrast between dark areas and light points that would ordinarily dazzle you and has the effect of dramatically reducing eye-strain.

On busier roads, the effect is the same, but the lights are very very busy. They direct light up along the sides of the car you are following and around bends, again reducing eye strain whilst improving vision. On an unlit dual carriageway they come into their own. The lighting systems uncanny ability to light your lane for miles ahead whilst not dazzling cars ahead of you or the oncoming traffic is amazing. You never have to use dipped beam, which on every other car I've ever owned, is hopelessly inadaquate at 70mph.

I can go much faster, much safer, and drive for much longer using matrix than I could with the LED equipped PFL S3 I handed back to Audi a few weeks ago. With those abilities they could look as cool as genital warts, and I'd still have them on my car.

Hey,

Need your help in this matter. I will ordering my 2017 S3 in couple of days but the only thing is left that I want to choose that if I should pay extra and get the Matrix LED. I really don't need it for it's actual function but I wanted it for when I give beam to people so that they move and main question is that when I giving high beam or flashing in other words to someone are they both powered they same.
I know that is rude by flashing other people but where I live it's must because if I never did, no one will ever move.

the question is are powered the same while flashing the high beams?

Kindly need your replay urgently and thanks in advance

If you're just ASBO'ing your way through traffic, standard lights will be more than offensive enough for your needs.

The standard LED lights are stoopid bright, giving laser eye surgery to anyone who is coming the other way. The only thing I've noticed, is the main beam, whilst very bright, tends to leave a darker patch around the middle to lower part of the road in front of the bonnet. It's still plenty bright enough, but I find it odd...

Sorry for digging up the old topic but is there any easy way to check if I have normal LED or Martix LED installed in my car?

2016 A3 8v FL

Also, do I need to adjust the lights or put the stickers if going abroad? I don't have anything like Tourist menu in the MMI..

Thanks

@Maniek matrix does a little dance when the car is turned on, easier to see in the dark.

I've had a look early morning and the lights did go up when I turned them on. I took a photo of the headlights, maybe that helps to determine if they are LED or Matrix LED.

Anyone knows if I have to do any adjustments when driving abroad?

This is what the user manual says. I’m going to France in a couple of weeks and I won’t be putting stickers on my (RHD facelift car) because I’ve got LEDs.

Looks like non-matrix, the matrix LEDS have three distinct sections to the side of the main beam.

Light

Yes, I think I have non-matrix... :(

Yep, they’re standard LEDS.

Here’s a close up of my Matrix LED, love them!
