Hi folks,

First time posting here but I recently had the min oil level light come on in my 64(15) S3, I was only 5-10 mins from home so figured i'd check in the morning. I took the car to a level place(my drive is a bit of a slope) and checked the oil level, at first the dipstick was coated - wiped it off and put it back in then it was about just below the min line however when I put the dipstick back in and got back in the car etc. I turned the car on and the light/noise disappeared? It now doesn't say low oil level and there's no light or anything.. i'm a bit confused to say the least but planning to nip out to get some oil anyways to give it a little top up but curious to know if this is a sensor problem or perhaps the oil level is okay and it was just a bad reading or something? Worth noting the car got oil serviced last year in like Sept(haven't done much driving since WFH/Covid) so don't really understand how this appeared but hey-ho.

Anyone experienced anything similar? I seen lots of threads about full oil but low light and says sensor might be broken or something but this one is a bit of a different scenario so i'm not 100%.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!

Always trust the dipstick over some sensor.
luckily there’s still dipstick in these cars. My last a6 had an electronic dipstick on the MMI and no easy way to tell how much to top up without overfilling it.

Most modern engines are well sealed and produce a good vacuum so to obtain a proper oil level get it to operating temps, turn off and leave it a few mins so oil can drain back into the sump area. Pull the dip stick and wipe clean, then poke it in and check level, wipe clean again and check level a second time if not sure. If still not happy try removing the oil filler cap to make sure there is no vacuum pressures within the engine and then check the oil level.

I had a Touarge V10 and it was a complete mare to get accurate dip stick oil level readings due to the engine vacuum being so good causing weird high and low readings. I always had to remove the oil filler cap before checking the oil level, strange but true.
