Hi all

I currently have 2013 A4 Avant black edition which has B&O fitted. About a month ago I was away for a few days and the wife was driving the car and she likes to play it loud, like up at nearly 30 whereas I tend to go to about 22 max. Anyway she picked me up at the airport and said there is something wrong with the car stereo as playing any kind of music through it from any source resulting in what sounded like popping/flapping/crackling come from some of the speakers.

I took it to a local ICE specialist who advised take it to Audi so I paid £130 for the privilege of local Audi dealer hooking it up to diagnostics and I then got a call later that day from the service centre to say it would be £6600 to fix! I eventually got to speak to the technician who told me the message hadn't been relayed back to me correctly and that what happened when they hooked the diagnostics up the SVM was saying the wrong 5F was fitted which explained that the MMI in the car wasn't the correct one which completely threw me as the car has had 3 previous owners to me and I'm pretty certain none of them would ever have swapped out the MMI and its been working fine in the almost 3 years that I've had the car and looks identical to the MMI that an B8.5 should have in it.

Anyway the technician explained that he has to tell me what the the diagnostics machine was telling him however it was clear that both front bass speakers in driver and passenger side door weren't working correctly and would need replaced and he thinks it "should" fix the issue but he has to cover his back in case i fork out £550 for these replacements and the issue is still there.

I did go back to the local ICE specialist after car had been at Audi who said they wouldnt replace these speakers and would replace the whole system including the amp at cost of £1k as sometimes replacing speakers only can cause the amp to go faulty and burning out speaker coils?

Has anyone a bit more tech savvy than me experienced this issue before and if so did replacing the 2 front bass speakers fix it?

Thanks in advance for any advice before I shell out to get these fixed (hopefully....)

Hey
I'm guessing they didn't give you the diagnostics read out? That would be useful to see.
If it was working and then stopped i would think its something like the speaker or the amp. These B&O amps are prone to issues. There are places I think that can recondition them. I don't have B&O so I could be wrong but I think the diagnostics scan goes down to the level of speaker failure so if you have a speaker that's lost connection somehow it would tell you that.

Really without seeing the readout it's hard to say where to start. Usually when the amps go they tend to cause a blackout on the MMI screen as well because the optical loop cuts out. Is that happening?

Hi and thank you for your reply

No unfortunately they never gave me the diagnostic read out, just the normal sales invoice and all this says is "LABINV- checked and needs both front bass speakers in front doors replaced then rechecked. svm saying wrong 5F fitted"

The whole system still actually works and has never stopped and I've had no black out on the MMI screen either. its only when you push the volume up past about 12 (out of 30) that you get this flapping/popping/crackly noise coming from the speakers in both the front door.

Its just the fact that initial quote to fix was £6600 which was effectively completely reinstalling a whole new MMI system plus whole new B&O system which the technician explained he had to tell me as this is what the diagnostic machine was telling him so he needs to point it out to me in case replacing the 2 front door bass speakers doesn't fix the issue which he seemed confident it would do. However bit wary of paying £500+ for this and it still doesn't fix it so was looking to see if anyone else had experience of this issue before I took the plunge.

Thanks again for replying.

You can use any 6.5" mid bass speaker with an abs adapter . I bought my adapter from aliexpress. I'm replacing all my B&O speakers as theyre **** and really cheap crappy speakers. check this thread Bruce may be of assistance

I'm currently in the middle of replacing all of the B&O crappy speakers in my 2015 S4, standard are really cheap paper cone type with a B&O sticker on them.
Dash Mid range speakers (left/right and centre) are done as are both front doors (165mm woofer + 1" tweeter) which has made massive improvement over standard, I'm now in the process of changing the rear door speakers (the same woofer/tweeter as the front) then on to the rear deck mids.
I'm replacing all the speakers with Focal 165 AS3 component speakers and modding the standard speaker mounts to keep it looking factory, it means being brutal and cutting away the old speaker from their mounts etc.

Once I've completed them all I'm going to do a post explaining all with step by step pictures.

A couple of photos to show what I mean.

Yep Im doing the same the speakers are the cheapest crappy ones from the parts bin,no way B&O had anything to do with these. For the fronts did you go with a crossover for the tweeters or use a capacitor,Im having trouble finding somewhere to put a crossover?I went with Audison Voce speakers and also added a seperate amp/bass speaker in the boot as the standard one is useless .

I also found no where to fit the crossovers and I guess (hope) Audi have separated the frequencies in the system, well that's my thinking.
The standard B&O tweeters have a 4.7 ohm capacitor on them, so I unsoldered them and reused them in-line to the new Focal ones.
I've completed the doors and dash speakers and now working out how I'm going to mount the rear deck Mids, I don't need to do the main Subwoofer as I did that around 18 months ago.

As I thought, I made a polystyrene mock up of the crossover I wanted to use and the only place to put one is under the dash which would require hacking into the wiring pre door connector .So I will look to add a couple of audiophile quality capacitors for the tweeters dont fancy hacking into the factory wiring .
