I finally got round to taking my car for a Revo stage 1 remap today, however when the garage did the health check they found carbon deposits on the valves and tops of the pistons and suggested I have the engine carbon cleaned, anyone have any experience or knowledge of this ? Are fuel additives any good/Are the guys with a machine better ?
 
Most of these engine carbon clean systems aren’t worth it, they don’t remove much, if anything at all. I remember when I had a Revo map done a few years back the dealer was also a Terraclean agent, he kept advising I get that done. Walnut shell blasting is decent but more expensive. Don’t waste your time and money on one of these plug in machine solutions.

Thanks fot the advice on the plug in carbon cleaning, I've been quoted £450 for walnut blasting, this will put the whole remap thing to around a grand, think I might just forget the idea
 
How many miles are on the engine? You might not necessarily need a carbon clean. £450 seems a bit steep, although everything has gone up in the last few years. Just get the remap done, you can always do the carbon clean at a later date.
 
My engine/car is just over 75k, that was the first price I was quoted for walnut blasting I kinda gave up after that. The garage weren't keen on doing the map till what they recomended got done, they suggested plugs and a couple of seals on the VVT covers as well
 
Are all the additives and treatments pointless, they claim allsorts but I suppose they would
 
Might be worth getting a second opinion… Contact a couple of other tuners/ garages locally and see what they advise. 75k isn’t mega mileage but these things do coke up over time.
I’m by far no expert on the S1 lump, perhaps some of the other owners on here could advise?
 
I honestly thought coking up was a thing of the past, but the more I learn, which isn't a lot lol, direct injection seems to cause this. I have ordered some GDI additive and some foam type cleaner to see if the DIY approach helps at all.
 
It’s definitely an issue with direct injection…Plenty of people have done the clean themselves with great results. I had RTech do mine a few years ago as I’m lazy, was around £300 back then with injector cleaning.
 
Picking up on this old thread... The S1(and many other EA888 Gen 3 equipped cars) has 8 eight injectors, 4 direct and 4 port injectors, and is therefore a lot less likely to have the same amount of carbon build up in the inlet tract. The port injectors tend to wash the valve stems and inlet tract and prevents the excessive carbon build up that you see with direct injection alone.
BTW, if anybody wants to clean carbon build up on the top of the piston crown, they'll have to take the head off, and that's typically not done and not an issue.
Yes, the best way to clean the intake tract from carbon build up is to have it blasted with walnut shells. It is the tried and tested way to get it done.
