08 B7 A4 2.0 TDCI . Cranking but not starting. ***SOLVED***

Very interested to see you sort this and what you find out - mine's a BRE too. No issues but you never know what the future holds and it's good to have in the bank. Best of luck.

Much appreciated, I need all the luck I can get.
I will keep on updated when I do something else, its good to have a record on here of what has been tried, and maybe one day what the solution was. The main issue I have is not having it scanned yet. The other issue is any of the relays I google say its for a fuel pump relay ! Over the weekend I tried the spare key and also put it into neutral rather than park, still no difference but I can rule it out. I have ordered a full set of relays and am awaiting them arriving.

mate you really need to invest in a scanner.. you can get those faultcode readers for these cars, they'll tell you what is wrong and give you the faultcode (you can erase them but that is it) ... my neighbor has one as he didn't want to buy yet another cable.. and since i'm not alays at home he decided it would be best to have one that can clearr the codes... but it's made for audi's so it reads all the modules ;) cost him just shy of 30 pounds... i don't know the brand as i used it once.

I only though you could do it through VCDS. Much appreciated once again. I have had a mooch around the interweb and am now investing in an OBD2 reader. I have a full set of relays to install once I get chance. I will let you know how I get on.

YEAHHHHHHH, its alive ! Changed all the relays under the dash, tried it again, nothing, just cranked as usual. Put the dash lower back together and went to change the 2 remaining relays under the ECU, the 2no 404 relays to the engine end, I noted that they fitted the other way up to each other, one had three spades to the bottom , the other they went to the top.
Ok, so now sat back in the car with my brand new shiny Autophixx 7610 OBD2 reader, then had to get back out to reach under to plug it in ! Now back in the car and set the scanner to scan, the right column started coming up with fail on everything, before realising the ignition was still turned off.
Ignition turned on and could hear a faint wooshing and a click, sat there listening for it again and could hear a faint clicking. Tried the scanner again and it worked great, and said there were no faults. I turned the key in anticipation, over it spun, a slight cough, and another and finally it caught and fired up.
Not sure if I cold be more pleased with myself to be honest.

So to recap, all relays changed but the two end ones under the ECU, engine end, 404 on the earlier photo, were the ones that made the difference, until these were changed there were no sounds of the fuel pump priming in the cabin.

Massive thanks to all who helped and offered advice and took the time to read this. Hope this thread helps others out in the future.

Ah man that must feel so good after all this time and frustration! I've been watching this one.
Well done, and thank you for confirming back....too many threads go cold on car forums when the OP has fixed the issue but never actually says the final cause or fix.
:salute:

I told you it was a relay... problem was finding the right one... 404 relay... people with the same engine, take note... a shame you didn't plug them in one by one than listen for the pump to prime... that way you would know exactly which one of the 2 it actually is. But pleased you sorted it out and you are back on the road, and you've saved yourself another relay search by replacing them all with new ones.

also glad you got yourself a form of diagnostics now so you can at least see what is wrong when the car acts up ;) Happy days!
