Hi all,

Two weeks in of ownership and it was all going so well.. ha!

I gave the car some beans on the way home earlier and all of a sudden the red coolant light came on (2014 S3 with 82k on the clock). I drove it carefully home keeping an eye on the engine temp and then checked the coolant. Basically all gone! There's a puddle of coolant resting on the under-tray, there's also a splash on the engine cover. Reading up it could be loads of things, I'm hoping it's a broken pipe or something similar.

Anyone else experienced this? I think I've found a garage to limp it to on Monday. I'm going to put some distilled water in it to get me there.

Thanks all, any thoughts greatly appreciated.

Russ

More than likely the water pump/thermostat housing, probably the most common of common faults. Take it to a specialist or someone who’s familiar with these, they’re notoriously difficult to bleed properly and should be vac fed. Only use proper coolant, apart from limping it to your garage as it will be renewed anyway.

Thanks a lot mate, really appreciate your thoughts. Big expensive job to fix?

I think it’s £600 - £700 at an indy, at Audi you’re probably looking at around £1500.

Hi Jon, you were correct, the unit had let go and needed replacing. They've ordered a whole unit including thermostat, around £650 all in, bet it back tomorrow.

I suppose, one way of looking at it, at least that's taken care of for a good few miles... ha
