Short answer is yes you can drive with no refrigerant. Soon as you low pressure switch senses no pressure it will disengage the compressor clutch so that no damage is done. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

First thing you want to make sure is the compressor clutch engaging at all. If so find the suction side of the System. If its warm or barley cold at all then you more then likely to have a stuck pressure regulator. Very common problem with dense and sanden compressors Very eazy to fix. But yeh...
