Ah....my tough old girl is 11 yrs now and done 174k miles...only about 10k have been done with me in 2 1/2 years though. She was a motorway car before for most of it.
Yeah your right...at £10 each for a Fabi mount I'll change em...it's a good price as most on eBay are around 25 each!
Alright...
Hey B5... looking at gearbox mounts online, how can you tell if they're shot because unlike regular bushes/mounts you can't really see the rubber on the gearbox mounts to see if it's worn or ripped.
There's a guy selling Febi ones on eBay for a tenner each so yeah the prices are reasonable.
Still haven't gotten around to renewing the subframe bushes yet as recovering from an op...but research has highlighted some other culprits maybe... could all this jerking around be caused by my tire tread being low? Or maybe something to do with the quattro driveshafts...or cv boots? Dunno...
Yep Will do thanks B5! I'm still trying to work out if I need a replacement subframe or just new mounts pressed in..
Do you mean check the engine + gearbox mounts as a precautionary measure or do you think they could be causing my problem? Maybe not as it's only when turning but I'll get up in...
Also...a nice tip I found on a scale modelling forum was to make a sort of filler you can dissolve small shavings of plastic into the solvent and fill quite large gaps with that if you have them.
Using neat MEK chemical bought online or maybe a model shop, the plastic would dissolve better... I...
Well I did a fair amount of research into it...erm I guess your using what I used an ABS plastic mesh. They say youve gotta find what type of plastic your using to get the best glue..sounds about right. Anyway on the back of your car trim you should see the abbreviation for the type of...
Yeah I see....yours don't look too bad apart from the crack!
What do you reckon of mine...
Before I changed by well worn upper control arms I only got the occasional clunk from what I now know was the subframe. Now I've replaced the control arms I'm getting clunks, it feels like the...
How did you discover that you had cracks in your subframe without removing the subframe first? I'm getting quite violent jerking and lifting when turning..usually over uneven ground, worse when on full lock.
The metal part of my front rear mounts has crumbled away and obv need changing but I'm...
I thought poly v belt was about 100k. I just begrudgingly changed my belt as I wanted to change the tensioner but the belt looked in fantastic condition despite having done way way over 100k.
Well.... I had my front upper control arms knocking around for a year or so and grew very accustomed to their rattle knocking noises. After a lot of heating and whacking with a sledge hammer I beat the pinch bolts and renewed all 4 upper arms on both sides.
Now the new arms have highlighted a...
SE!!!! Haha nah man it's the 3.0 tdi S line Lê Mans 233bhp upped to 275 with about 40-45 mpg thanks to the stage 1 remap.
Ahhhh yeah the intercooler pipe....the Mrs said to paint it also recently when I did the crankshaft pulley/belt/tensioner etc....but I had had it off the road for too long...
Coolio.... yeah they're lovely cars and you get a lot for the money. Nice for cruising, luxurious etc. I've had to change a few things on mine recently but that's fine as they're such nice cars, a pleasure to drive
Well over the Christmas period I've had a go at doing my honeycomb mesh grills. Made a pretty serious mess of plastic dust, particles and paint... got pretty high off the paint and solvent glue! But in the end they've turned out ok... I'd have liked to spend a little more time to perfect things...
SPANIARD!!!! haha well at least you've always got good weather down there to work on the car.
Yeah it looks really good!
I was going to ask which glue you used and if you had any difficulty attaching the mesh. And paint, did you use primer, base coat then lacquer? I've got some primer and...
Ha yep I hear you re "this ain't the weather for outside car fixin!"... normally so do I... but new 1st baby has been taking a lot of my time over the summer esp... and I thought...yeah I'll do those arms a few weeks before the mot runs out... that was the start of October and I'm still...
Ok what about this then.... forget everything I've said earlier, mostly.
Have I or have I not stripped the thread... it was nighttime and I was impatient to get finished and in as you do. Well your in Scotland so brave the weather better than a soppy southerner anyway.. but you get me.
I...
Ahh you just replaced the whole grill piece with honeycomb mesh..I was thinking about that but problem was what to do with the little pointy bit in the middle that sticks out further than the grill....
Have you got any pic of the car front so we can better see how that set up looks.
Cool.
What do you reckon about this. Obviously I've got the hassle of changing these or this bolt so if it can be avoided hey that's great
So...what about taking off the nut, having a look at threads in nut & bolt...if all looks good then see if it'll tighten back up to torque spec (approx) but with...
