as crazy as it sounds, the answer may be to simply turn down the brightness of the display. If i have my display on full brightness (roller wheel beside headlight switch) then it flickers on and off, turn it down just a tiny bit and it works fine, the switch must have just gone funny. hope...

Thanks for all the pointers, I've still got the problem and was going to try Kef's thoughts this evening but my aircon garage reckon the fan is fine and that the problem is in fact the computer bit in the car ( the control panel). I've sent it to BBA Reman for fixing so hopefully that will solve...

But if you're replacing it because your existing unit is broken then you should consider a remanufacture first. I sent mine to a company called BBA Reman, 5working days and £150 later I have a perfect unit again. Beats the £500 audi wanted for a new part.
