Well, I had a quick look under the front of the car this morning and the plastic engine cover seems as solid as a rock?! Looks like i'm definitely gonna have to wait until it's up on a ramp before investigating further!

So was yours making a similar noise then? And was it easy to tell it was broken?

I've done roughly 6k miles in mine and i'm averaging between 38-42mpg, although mine is multitronic which is pretty crap for fuel economy. I would expect you to get more than 38mpg in a manual though.
