I definitely recommend the OE retrofit kit, if you can find it. It makes the wiring a doddle and doesn't leave any bodged/spliced wires, it wires right back to the fuse box and puts a lamp in the dash IIRC. Liam

I had this same problem once before on. It turned out to be a bad earth, specifically the earth bolted to the top of the cam cover between the coil packs.

I'm MK based but my S3 is off the road waiting for a replacement rear haldex diff to be fitted ;(
