This pile of junk has always had an intermittent missing at tickover - irritating, but not terminal.

I can't really justify a brand new VCDS cable. I assume the (£7ish) ones on a certain auction site are hookey, but surely there must be a second hand market for these - is there a way to tell which ones are genuine?
Before anyone warns me, I've done a thorough visual check, nothing's hanging off/out, pads are all present correct and with plenty of thickness left etc, and fluid level is perfect and not dropping/leaking and brake operation is 100% normal.
I suspect this is pad wear sensors and/or connections...
Just a quick share in case anyone with a 1.6 FSI gets this. Set off yesterday and got flashing Check Engine Light followed by it lighting up continuously and car running very badly, lacking power (not that there was much to start with).

So I had the MIL light on and my ten-quid code reader says P0403 which is a generic EGR system problem. Doing a search turned up a load of folk with broken EGR pipes on A2s with "my" engine. Anyone had this issue? The valve is 35 quid for one off a scrapper or about 180 so I want to make sure...

What's involved in a move from Sport (not S-line) to comfort suspension - car's a 1.6 FSI 2005 Sport and they might as well not have bothered fitting any suspension for all the good it is. I don't want to move away from what might have been fitted originally (wasn't it a no-cost option?) but...
