Can I just clarify that my comment above about the dogs (my 2 weigh around 35kgs each) was my attempt of a joke, I actually used to put the kids in the boot while the dogs were belted up in the back seat. I have now sold the S4 so don't have this option!

It's to stop stuff in the boot flying forward and smacking you in the back of the head when you're on your way to the tip and need to brake suddenly!! It also stops dogs from doing the same!
