The vast majority of warranty swapouts will be refurbished. Although they are to such a high standard that nobody would ever be able to tell. The Geniuses will of course say they are brand new to avoid 'confrontations' in store :-)

In my experience the car allowance is instead of a company car. It's taxed as if its just extra cash in the wage packet. Depending on mileage to work etc might be ok. You can generally charge back work related travel (not the commute) at a slightly higher per mile rate than a company car owner...

If you are getting random freezes and slow performance it's definitely worth getting the hard drive checked out. If its having trouble reading/writing then even the simplest action can take an age making the machine look like its stalled... Nothing worse than embarking on a series of upgrades...
