There are four lighting modes, which can be changed in adaptation channel 19 of the instrument control module, according to the VCDS website:
Mode 0: Nothing lit until ext. light on
Mode 1: Pointers lit all the time
Mode 2: Scales lit all the time
Mode 3: Pointers and Scales lit all the time

The following is a guide (not mine) for installing cruise:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/103952776/A4%20Cruise.pdf
The method is basically the same for DIS except you switch the wiper stalk for the rocker-switch one instead of adding in the cruise stalk (or do both which is what I did)...
No...
Not Fullrun by any chance? My old A4 had those on the rear from the dealer and I've never lost the back end so many times as I did with those - and that even includes on my old 200sx!
Apologies if the b6 and b7 differ in this respect, but in my car (b7) there is a little lock on the ends of the rear doors near to the locking mechanism itself which you turn with the key to activate / deactivate the child locks.
Not without upgrading your hardware (i.e. a new stalk with the rocker switch, and likely a new steering column control module). Can be done DIY for around a hundred quid, but if you don't have the tools and coding software it's probably cheaper to pay someone to do it...
That could be true. It's a few years since I did this, but I originally got a quote from them (about 4 years ago mind!) and they wanted £225 all in. I bought parts for:
Cruise stalk (4E0 953 521 4PK)@ £21.20+vat
Trim (8E0 953 512 P6PS) £22.15+vat
Steering wheel Control Module (8E0 953 549 N)...
That looks like a good price. I think that might have come down, I'm sure they used to be more expensive. The only thing to check is, if you did have a suitable SCSM already (if you have a multifunction steering wheel, for example) then it is suddenly not such a good price since that's a huge...
I never figured out what a remote clock was either! Easiest way to figure out if you have it is to check your existing code (assuming that it is correct) - the last digit of the adaptation code is either a 1 or 0 for remote clock active or not active.
I produced a simple coding tool a while back that is linked to in my sig. Not sure if sig shows up on posts from tapatalk - if not I'll try and dig out the link.
Edit: Seems the link shows up on the main site but not on tapatalk, so here it is again in case it's useful...
I think they're on the Ross Tech website. It's the central convenience module that needs coding, and in fact, in VCDS itself it will tell you the coding required via a pop up when you select the coding entry field. For remote operation, I think you also need to set the correct adaptation values...
Perhaps I am misunderstanding what you mean by a "full function computer". When I bought the car I found that it only displayed "range to empty" and that there was no way I could switch the display to show, for example, "average mpg". I too was amazed that my Audi could not do what my mates...
I'm not sure this is true. I have a 2003 1.8T Sport and I upgraded the computer by simply purchasing a new stalk (with the buttons on the end) and then fitting it myself. Cost me about £60. The only additional thing you have to do is reprogram the instrument cluster. This can be done easily...
You need VagCom (or similar) which can be found at ross-tech.com. Depending on what car you have and its age the shareware version can do this - then you only need to spend ~£15 on a suitable lead. If your car is newer it will cost significantly more. Give us some more info and we can take it...
If it's any help, I'm in Leicester with a registered version of VagCom 409 and a non-CAN bus lead. If you want to try it out then drop me a PM and let me know...

This is where I got my lead: http://www.vagproducts.co.uk/vagcom.html
I use it with version 409 of VagCom, which can be downloaded here:
