I only say the starter moter after reading a few other threads on similar issues and it had been the culprit a couple of times due to not having the cranking power. Is there a way to check the g/plugs?

The car has been difficult to start from cold for a while now it does always start but sometimes I have to crank it a few times before it fires up. My battery voltage appears to be very good, so I was thinking of replacing the starter motor but I just wondered is there anything else I could try...

Might be worth doing a dsg reset and re-sync/calibration. You need vcds, some open quiet and patients.
