Its not difficult if you do it in stages, peel off the backing in one corner and apply it to a spotless headlight, and smooth it down with a lint-free cloth and keep smoothing across the headlight following yourself as you peel off the backing.

Audi DIS is red but the dial backlights are white, and my DIS changes colour dependant on what its showing me, so nerrrr
If you have an OBD II logger like PCMSCAN, you could tell what the advance/****** setting was at all times and can log it in a graph, this would also show you any deviation in what should be a smooth curve.
